Dylan fled the village after confessing to murdering Ray Walters

Viewers know that Bear Wolf killed Ray to stop him from killing his son Paddy and Dylan on New Year’s Day.

Vet Paddy and Dylan then teamed up to move the body to cover up what had happened in an effort to protect Bear who was and is traumatised after being kept as a slave by Ray and his twisted mum Celia Daniels.

This week the truth finally emerged after Bear claimed he’d wanted to murder Ray to stop the police digging into Paddy’s involvement.

Realising that the jig is up, Paddy and Dylan confessed to what really happened.

However when they were both charged with perverting the course of justice, things took a darker turn.

In today’s episode Dylan sees the devastation caused by Ray, and blames himself – and makes a shocking decision.

“April I’m really sorry,” he said as she called and asked where he was.

“I posted a letter to the police saying it was me that killed Ray and that Paddy and Bear had nothing to do with it. What else could I do? I’ve ruined their lives. This way no-one goes to prison, it’s for the best.”

April begged him to reconsider and return but his mind was made up.

“I really didn’t want to leave you April, it’s killing me,” he told her.

With that he hung up the phone and left into the night – but has he gone for good?

Or is there another twist to come in the storyline that has seen some of the darkest scenes in Emmerdale history?
