Easter holidaying Brits brace for ‘severe’ Storm Erminio barrelling into Greece with RED weather alerts for rain & hail

SEVERE thunderstorms, snow and gusty winds are sweeping across Greece in the days before Easter weekend.

The country will be blasted with heavy rains, winds and possibly even hail as Storm Erminio wreaks havoc on the popular holiday spot.

The storm is moving swiftly east from Sicily into Cyprus and Greece with wind speeds reaching 31mph.

Blood red skies give a hellish tinge to the island of Crete as the sun is obscured by a dust storm.

Flights to the Greek island were disrupted as a storm front battered the mainland, keeping most ferries in port.

State weather service EMY in a statement forecast “severe weather” to Thursday in most parts of the country “with prolonged and intense rain and thunderstorms, and possibly localised hailstorms.”

In Crete, three flights headed to Iraklio had to be rerouted, state news agency ANA said.

More chaos in the northern region of Greece as heavy snowfall will obscure the mountainous regions of Epirus and Macedonia.

The Greek weather service has issued red alert warnings across eastern Peloponnese, Central Greece, Evia, Thessaly, the Sporades Islands, Attica, and the Dodecanese.

There is also an orange warning for the Cyclades, and the islands of the eastern Aegean.

Videos on social media show torrential rains and hail battering northern Greece as the streets are flooded with rivers of slush.

The national weather service has issued emergency warnings as the “severe” weather is set to impact almost the entire country and its islands.

The meteorological mayhem is expected to last across Wednesday and Thursday, but will ease off at the end of the week.

Hazardous weather also hit Tenerife last week in what locals are calling “the storm of the decade”.

The tropical island was lashed with rain, heavy winds and snow as Storm Therese battered the beaches.

Cancelled flights, blocked roads and severe flooding plagued the holiday hotspot as winds reached 73mph and icicles and snow blanketed the region.

To the relief of Brit holidaymakers, the wild weather looks set to ease over the Easter weekend.
