TRAVELLERS were forced to do a double take as a car ploughed into an airport terminal before the driver was led away in handcuffs.
Jaw-dropping footage captures the chaotic aftermath at Detroit Metro Airport on Friday night, showing a black sedan stranded in the middle of the terminal as travellers look on in disbelief.
Delta Airlines staff were given the fright of their lives when the vehicle came smashing through the terminal’s glass doors at around 7.30pm.
In doing so, debris was sent flying across the check-in area.
In the moments that followed, the driver climbed out of the car with his hands raised above his head.
With glass strewn across the floor, airport security rushed in, quickly surrounding the unnamed individual.
Identifiable only by his American football jersey, he was clapped in handcuffs.
Despite his incoherent screams, he was then swiftly led away by a team of security guards.
Shocked bystanders could do nothing but watch as the dramatic arrest unfolded.
Emergency crews were called to the scene, and it is believed six people were treated by medical staff amid the chaos.
Fortunately, Delta Airlines later confirmed that no serious injuries occurred.
The airline said three of its employees were struck by debris when the out-of-control vehicle slammed into a check-in desk.
They were assessed on site as airport operations continued uninterrupted.
Shocked traveller Ali Khalifa said: “The response was so quick thank god with the cops and TSA and everybody.”
“Our team is gathering information, and we hope to have an update shortly,” airport officials added.
The motorist remains in custody as investigators work to piece together exactly what happened.
Questions remain how the car managed to smash through the glass entrance.
Especially given separate images appear to show metal barricades positioned in front of the terminal.
Confirming the ongoing investigation, airport officials said: “The driver is in custody and the cause of the crash is unknown at this time.”
The Wayne County Airport Authority Police Department is now leading the investigation into the alarming incident.
