IT will be snow going for millions today as the nation struggles back to work after the festive break — but the freeze has left dozens of schools closed.
Large swathes of the country have been hit with yellow weather warnings.
An inch of snow was predicted in the South West, Greater Manchester and the Midlands overnight — rising to more than 3in in higher parts of North and East Yorkshire and Wales.
A more serious amber alert was issued for northern Scotland, with blizzard conditions forecast.
More than 40 schools in Scotland said they would remain shut today, with others delaying start times.
Motorists have been told to anticipate delays to journeys by road, with bus and train services likely to be affected too.
The Met Office said: “Wintry showers will move across Britain throughout today leading to a risk of ice in places as people return to work after the Christmas break.”
The UK Health Security Agency has issued amber cold alerts for England until tomorrow — with people asked to check in on vulnerable friends and relatives.
Families enjoyed the icy conditions yesterday as snow-lovers were seen riding their sledges in Pontardawe, near Swansea.
Visitors enjoyed the sunrise at a wintery Stonehenge, while the village of Lixwm in North Wales was blanketed by the white stuff.
A “wolf” supermoon was visible across most of the country, with one snap in Wakefield, West Yorks, capturing the International Space Station passing in front of it.
The Met Office added the arrival of milder air spreading eastwards tomorrow will raise chances of rain in the South — but also create the possibility of more snow.
