DOZENS of firefighters are battling a huge industrial blaze that has forced the closure of major tunnels and prompted warnings for football fans to “stay away.”

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters were called to the scene after the London Fire Brigade (LFB) received reports of the blaze at 6.13pm.

Crews from East Greenwich, Deptford, Poplar and surrounding stations were among those sent to tackle the flames.

An LFB spokesperson said: “An industrial unit is alight. The fire is under control; however, firefighters will remain on scene for some time in order to extinguish the fire fully.”

“As of 2130 hrs, the fire continues to produce a significant amount of smoke and people in the local area are advised to keep windows and doors closed. There have been no reports of any injuries at this time.

“A multi-agency decision has been made to close a number of roads due to smoke travel.

“This includes both the Blackwall Tunnel and Silvertown Tunnel for drivers travelling northbound. The Blackwall Tunnel Approach is shut northbound from the Sun in the Sands Roundabout.

“Local road closures are also in place on Tunnel Avenue and Blackwall Lane.

“Drivers travelling northbound are advised to find alternative routes and to expect extended journey times. Drivers travelling southbound via the Blackwall Tunnel may also face some disruption.
