Not only this, but according to Jade, an animal expert from the UK, there’s also a daily task you must never skip – and if you do, it could be costly.

Posting on social media, Jade, who has three dogs and three tortoises, shared the “five things” she wished every dog owner knew.

First things first, Jade, who just days ago posted an important warning for cat owners, got candid on kennel cough.

She explained: “Your dog doesn’t have to go into kennels to catch kennel cough – it spreads easily in social settings like parks/doggy day care through shared items like communal water bowls and toys.”

Secondly, the content creator expressed why brushing your pet’s teeth every single day is critical.

The vet said: “You should brush your dog’s teeth daily – dental disease is the most common health problem seen in dogs which can lead to liver, kidney and heart disease.”

As well as this, Jade revealed the common mistakes dog owners must avoid, and letting them lick their wounds tops the list.

Jade recognised that dog’s mouths “do not contain antiseptic” and as a result, claimed letting them lick wounds “does not help with healing.”

She warned: “Dog’s mouths are full of bacteria which cause infection and excessive licking will irritate the wound and delay healing.”

As well as this, Jade, who previously shared the five dog breeds she would never own, explained why overfeeding your pet could be fatal.

Jade stressed: “Overweight dogs live on average up to 2.5 years less than ideal weight dogs. I know you love them but please don’t kill your dogs with kindness.”

Finally, Jade got candid on the two items that are “not safe toys for dogs” – sticks and tennis balls.

While she acknowledged that sticks can “cause injuries ranging from minor to fatal,” she recognised that tennis balls “damage teeth and pose a serious choking hazard.”

As a result, she reinforced: “Please choose safer, dog friendly alternative toys.”

Dog Owner Guide: All You Need To Know

Owning and keeping a dog happy and healthy is not only a long-term financial, but a lifetime commitment.

Nine facts you should know ahead of time:

Another asked: “Do I really have to brush my teeth daily?”

To this, Jade replied and confirmed: “Yes! Dental disease can be very painful and serious so prevention is better than cure for both your dog and your wallet.”

Meanwhile, someone else chimed in and wondered: “What’s the best way to brush a dog’s teeth? And what kind of toothpaste? I’ve heard just using coconut oil on your finger works well. What’s your thoughts?”

In response, Jade explained: “I’ll try to make a video soon showing owners how to best brush their dogs teeth.

“Toothpastes I recommend are the PetSmile (the only toothpaste with VOHC approval) and the Virbac Enzymatic.

“Just make sure whatever you get is definitely a dog toothpaste because human toothpaste is toxic to them.”
