The 28-year-old had been due back in Merseyside for pre-season training and was on his way to catch a ferry when the tragedy struck.

It rocked the football world, with Liverpool and Wolves particularly impacted due to his outstanding history with both clubs.

The two Premier League sides came together this afternoon to celebrate the life and legacy of Jota in their first meeting since the devastating accident.

Both sets of players were led out by his two young sons, Dinis, 4, and Duarte, 2, who were dressed in kits with ‘Jota 20’ on the back.

The Portuguese superstar had scored 65 goals and provided 26 assists in 182 appearances for Liverpool before his death.

He also managed 63 goal contributions in 131 appearances for Wolves during his three-year spell at Molineux.
