‘Devastating’ blaze rips through historic rugby club’s stadium destroying clubhouse as multiple crews battle inferno

A HISTORIC sports ground was devastated this morning after a huge fire tore through its clubhouse.

The blaze ripped through Penarth Athletic Club near Cardiff, Wales, which functions as the headquarters for the seaside town’s cricket, hockey and rugby teams.

Fire crews and emergency services swooped down on the scene at around 5am, with the blaze brought under control just under three hours later.

Pictures from the scene showed orange flames lighting up the night sky as thick smoke poured into the air.

The clubhouse this morning was left a charred wreck after the blaze ripped through.

Debris and broken pieces of metal and wood littered the floor following the carnage.

Penarth Athletic Club is famous for also hosting annual matches against the Barbarians.

The club said in a statement: “Absolutely devastating news to bring you this morning about our beloved Club House. We are all in a state of shock as it’s such a hub of the community for so many people of all ages.

“So many memories have been lost but thankfully no one was hurt!

“Special thanks to South Wales Fire Service for their quick response and efforts. Big thanks to everyone who has reached out to Dan & Hubbs offering support and services.

“Penarth Rugby, Penarth Cricket and Penarth Hockey will all come together and we will rebuild!”

In a post on X, Cardiff Rugby said the fire was “devastating,” adding it will be in touch to see how it can support Penarth RFC.
