Dems and Des Moines Cry Out for Return of Inspirational Gun-Totin’, Election Votin’ Illegal Alien – HotAir

I am in a perpetual state of disbelief, watching Democrats at every level wrap themselves in the latest wrong side of the Outrage du Jour.

Their mindless drones, I get. They can only be programmed probably once or twice a month, and once you feed the message into their essentially single-cell-level neural systems, it takes time before you can adjust a message that may have had a glitch during transmission.

So you would think that elected Democrats and those in positions of responsibility would be the, if not voices of reason on the opposing side, at least they’d present a coherent argument for why they chose that side while letting their Borg collective chant mindlessly in the background for effect.

You’d think wrong.

Take this recent case of the Des Moines, Iowa, school superintendent, who, because I guess he had a sexy accent and the appropriate skin complexion for a school board headed by Michelle Obama’s former chief of staff and rumored to be looking for a diversity hire, turned out to be something more than the mere scholarly gentleman of learning they’d employed.

David had all the breaking details that were known at the time.

As Ed noted yesterday in his Final Word, something unusual occurred in Des Moines yesterday: its superintendent of public schools was arrested by ICE in pursuance of a final deportation order issued in May 2024.

He was caught after fleeing ICE officers, carrying $3,000 cash and a loaded gun. It turns out that he had a criminal record as well, about which the School Board knew when they hired him in a secret process designed to choose the best candidate.

Oh, well, darn if some stuff doesn’t slip through the cracks, right?

BUT THE BEST CANDIDATE

And everyone makes mistakes, which is why school board chair Jackie Norris, the former Obama CoS, was calling for ‘radical empathy. They all adored Ian Roberts, and Des Moines insisted they simply couldn’t live without the *checks notes* illegal Guyanese visa overstay, with a long-time permanent removal order and a 2020 weapons possession charge.

All that before he ran from ICE officers with another weapon, plus a hunting knife, in his school-board-issued vehicle.

…”There is much we do not know,” Norris said. “However, what we do know is that Dr. Roberts has been an integral part of our school community since he joined over two years ago.”

ICE alleges that Roberts is in the country illegally from Guyana. They say he is not legally permitted to work in the United States and had a final order of removal from a judge issued in May 2024.

Roberts was arrested after allegedly driving away from law enforcement. He later abandoned his car in the woods, and Iowa State Patrol ended up finding him, according to a press release.

“This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement,” ICE ERO St. Paul Field Office Director Sam Olson said in a statement.

He is a garden-variety international bad apple.

Most people would like to know how such a colorful character came into a $270K a year job.

Or, as more information continues to dribble out, any of the big time jobs he held previously to the Des Moines one he lost so spectacularly.

…Roberts, 52, claims a Bachelor of Science degree from Coppin State University in Baltimore and received his doctorate in Urban Educational Leadership and a Master’s degree in Education from St. John’s University in Queens, New York City. He was previously superintendent in the Millcreek Township School District, which covers suburban areas outside Erie, Pennsylvania.

That means that he filled out this paperwork previously and either revealed his undocumented status or lied.

He also worked as the superintendent of the St. Louis Public Schools High School Network, as well as a chief schools officer, superintendent of secondary schools, principal, and senior vice president of a charter management organization in Baltimore, the South Bronx, and Washington, D.C.

As Des Moines’ 15th superintendent, he received  a base salary of $270,000 annually as part of his two-year contract. It also includes a payment to a “tax-sheltered annuity” of 14% of his annual salary, as well as a $600 monthly car allowance and reimbursement for “all in-district related travel.”

How in the Sam hell did all these major school districts snag this fellow one after another, and not a one catch wind of the ‘illegal’ part?

In the meantime, Des Moines is throwing itself a huge hissy fit over this illegal, gun and hunting knife totin’ escapee, and mournfully quoting the criminal as if he were Mahatma Gandhi.

…When ICE and Iowa State police moved to arrest him, Roberts sped off. He was later found hiding in high grass, and his car contained a loaded handgun, a large amount of cash, and a hunting knife.

Associate Superintendent Matt Smith will serve as interim superintendent and quoted Roberts as a guide on how they would move forward. Smith expressed how “devastated” the district is over the arrest, but “In the words of Dr. Roberts, ‘if you paddle together, you will survive the tide. If you paddle alone, you will likely drown.’ As we learn more, we chose to paddle together.”

And are still paying his salary.

WE WANT OUR ILLEGAL BACK

Sadly for them and the trees that died for the little protest signs, I don’t think the suave and literate Ian Roberts will be back in Des Moines any time soon.

There’s kind of been enough time to follow up on the good doctor’s past for the couple of decades he’s been flitting about the US illegally, and, welp.

Let’s just say he’s in some hot water.

For starters:

…Among the red flags:

He carries a Maryland state ID available to certain visa holders (F, J, or M categories).

– His Social Security card was issued out of New York, and its validity is being questioned.

And the kicker? His deportation order was issued in May 2024… by the Biden administration.

A Democrat administration thought this man should have been deported.

Now Democrats are painting him as a martyr of Trump’s immigration policies.

It’s beyond parody.

But then came ‘that thing’ –THAT THING that we’re told never, EVER happens.

Mahatma Roberts, a kind, hard-working school superintendent who spouts beautiful sayings that should be immortalized on wall plaques and break room coffee mugs, was an illegal Guyanese visa overstay with weapons charges and a long-term permanent deportation order who was also registered to vote in Maryland.

Yuh-huh.

Well, knock me over with a feather.

Ever so deserving of ‘radical empathy,’ indeed.

But Polk County is all in on wearing hair shirts and wailing in the streets for the multiple felon, and that really shouldn’t be too surprising, looking at the wee blip of blue that is Des Moines.

…In a post on Facebook, Iowa Rep. Larry McBurney, D-Des Moines, said he was “furious” about Roberts’ arrest: “This is not only unacceptable, it is an outright disgrace.” He added:

“I hold President Trump and Iowa’s delegation — Congressman Zach Nunn, Senator Chuck Grassley, and Senator Joni Ernst — directly responsible for this action. Their silence or complicity will not go unnoticed. If they have any shred of leadership, they must intervene immediately.”

Never mind that it was a Biden administration deportation order.

Facts are immaterial when ‘radical empathy’ is on the line!

It also answers how a county could wind up with a former senior Obama staffer as school board chief, hiring DEI felonious illegals, who is married to a – oh, get THIS – former John Kerry aide, who costs the county $4.2M in a lawsuit after he libeled the fired county HR chief, and the pair still isn’t chased out of the state by angry mobs.

I imagine someone is combing through Maryland voting records, while they’re still available (if you get my drift), to see if the dear doctor ever cast a vote.

I’m afraid the poor, distraught, and confused progressive people of Des Moines will eventually have to realize their precious canoe mate is permanently upstream – at the rate his felonies are piling up, it might soon be upriver – and they will have to learn to paddle on alone.

No doubt, attention spans being what they are in progressive circles, another unworthy 20% radical empathy cause will soon present itself to rally in front of.

That’s always where the cannon fodder stands.
