Democrats Are Suddenly Anti-Mask – HotAir

It may seem a bit nitpicky of me to compare Democrats’ love and mandating of masks during the COVID tyranny and their about-face on masks for law enforcement today, but it really isn’t, at least not entirely.

First, the point isn’t that masks themselves are the issue, but rather what the Democrats consider the appropriate use of state power. During COVID, with no actual scientific evidence (and substantial derogatory evidence), the Democrats went to extreme lengths to force American citizens to wear masks to combat the spread of COVID.

Enormous amounts of police power, money, and the use of unconstitutional power to silence opposition were used to impose draconian policies that harmed children, divided society, and helped undermine faith in our medical and public health systems.

Now, Democrats are calling ICE agents “Gestapo,” and working to pass laws to prevent law enforcement agents–who are the subject of massive propaganda campaigns calling them Nazis, death threats, and doxxing–from wearing masks.

Law enforcement agents wearing masks is hardly a new practice, although it should only be used in extraordinary circumstances. I agree that, in the ordinary course of things, law enforcement officials should not be anonymous agents of the state. It inhibits accountability, sets law enforcement apart from the community, and presents a menacing face of the state.

But ICE agents in this political environment–an environment of hostility egged on by the Democrats themselves, who compare law enforcement agents carrying out the very duties for which they were hired, and whom the Democrats themselves have voted to fund to Nazis and Secret Police.

Moreover, the Democrats have been egging on “protesters” who are committing actual crimes of violence while wearing masks, and even sending government funds to organizations that are purchasing gas masks for the protesters. Democratic Party politicians are assaulting law enforcement agents–let’s face it, if Senator Padilla weren’t an elected official, he would have been charged with assault–to get publicity for their support of illegal aliens.

Looters are wearing masks. Arsonists are wearing masks. Rioters are wearing masks. Leftists are doxxing law enforcement agents and calling for their assassination.

And the Democrats are trying to make all this easier. In a better world, Americans would be either assisting ICE or registering their disapproval for Trump’s policies by contacting their legislators and making their opposition heard in a peaceful and rational way.

Through speech, in other words.

But that is not what is happening. Quite the opposite. The left and their Democratic Party allies are trying to create a “rioter’s veto,” in which violence becomes an argument for ignoring laws that the vast majority of Americans support and want enforced. The goal is to ensure that a small fraction of the population that is willing to engage in violence and destruction gets to determine government policy.

Democrats used the vast power of the state to impose mandates on Americans to which they objected. The overturned laws banning the use of masks in public–laws intended to ensure that criminals were not shielded from exposure–and instead forced Americans to wear masks to show solidarity in the fight against COVID. There was never any public health reason for wearing masks, as Anthony Fauci admitted early in the pandemic, but the government imposed the mandate to create mass compliance with its orders. It was symbolic.

Now, Democrats’ crusade to unmask ICE agents is again about enhancing their power by allowing masked rioters to endanger law enforcement. When the Democratic Party pushed “defund the police,” it was about empowering the left to intimidate law enforcement. Now the Democrats want to empower masked rioters to hunt down ICE agents to intimidate them.

With that said, I believe there should be a means to identify officers who abuse their power. Ensuring that the identities of individuals are protected shouldn’t mean that law enforcement is immune from accountability if they abuse the awesome power of the state. Perhaps there should be identifying numbers instead of names and faces.

I leave that up to others to figure out.

But Democrats’ faux outrage about anonymity is pure hypocrisy. They support the anonymity of lawbreakers and clearly want law enforcement agents to feel at risk.
