A loose Virgil van Dijk trip gifted FA Cup winners Crystal Palace a penalty – which Jean-Philippe Mateta converted on 17 minutes.
But another summer Anfield arrival, Jeremie Frimpong, restored Liverpool’s lead in fortunate fashion.
His dinked cross to the back post looped over Dean Henderson and drifted inside the side netting.
But Van Dijk was at fault again when he stepped up – allowing Ismaila Sarr to finish for 2-2 on 77 minutes.
Moments later, there was a controversial VAR check for a handball against Alexis Mac Allister – but Palace were denied a penalty.
And in doing so, it guaranteed penalties – a shootout straight after 90 minutes.
Mo Salah blazed the opening effort flying over the bar and Dean Henderson saved Mac Allister’s to put Palace in control of the shootout – only for Eberechi Eze to squander his penalty after a stuttering run-up.
But when Henderson blocked from Harvey Elliott, new signing Borna Sosa had the chance to win it… but crashed the crossbar.
Justin Devenny made no mistake with his spot-kick, though, as he blasted past Alisson into the top corner.
