Last month, a one-year-old child was sadly killed after being struck by a train in New South Wales.
Paramedics raced the girl to hospital after the tragic accident in Baan Baa, near Narrabri, but the toddler later succumbed to her injuries.
Narrabri Shire Council Mayor Darrel Tiemens said: “Our hearts go out, obviously, to the family of the little girl tragically lost… it’s a devastating event and really deeply affected our close-knit community of Baan Baa.
“They’re a young family that’s moved into the area, is my belief, and it’s just tragic.”
The town has a population of just 170 and councillor Tiemens said the community would take a while to recover.
He said: “If this happened in a suburb of Sydney it would be tough, but when it happens in a tiny village where everyone knows everyone, its really hard to take.
“It’s an incredible community… they will rebuild but at the moment it’s just a matter for us all getting over the shock.”
The 22-year-old driver was taken to hospital for mandatory testing, but did not suffer any injuries.
Tiemens said that the community’s thoughts were with him too.
He added: “Also, the emergency service workers who had to attend until the small hours last night, and also the hospital staff who had to respond under such heartbreaking circumstances.”
