THIS highstreet supermarket has emerged as the cheapest place for Christmas shopping, beating both Aldi and Lidl to the top spot.
At £81.98, Asda’s basket came in £2.90 cheaper than Tesco’s and was 10 per cent cheaper than all its other full-range rivals.
The turkey proved to be the key difference.
Priced at £11.75 for 1.75kg, Asda was £3.65 cheaper than Tesco.
Its gammon and bacon were also cheaper, and its chipolatas were joint-cheapest.
Asda also offered the cheapest premium own-label prosecco on shelves.
A spokesperson for Asda said: “We’re continuing to invest in low prices to help protect customers from inflation.
“That’s why Asda is the UK’s cheapest full-range supermarket, beating rivals on both base and loyalty prices.”
Asda’s closest competitor was Tesco, with a basket totalling £84.88.
To its credit, Tesco sold the cheapest Terry’s Chocolate Orange, Nozeco, and cheese selection.
Asda was 10.3 per cent cheaper than Morrisons, whose basket totalled £91.43.
However, Morrisons also lowered their prices the most year on year, with discounts contributing to a 7.5 per cent discount on its 2024 prices.
It was also 11.6 per cent cheaper than Sainsbury’s, which offered the cheapest potatoes, roasting tray, and Christmas pudding.
Unsurprisingly, Waitrose did not feature as the cheapest for any items.
With a basket costing £118.02, Asda was 30.5 per cent cheaper than the upmarket retailer.
However, MoneySavingExpert’s Martin Lewis crowned Costco the winner for things like Christmas dinner and shopping.
This was determined by comparing 15 items against the next cheapest.
Common Christmas presents, like toys and perfume, were also included in the basket.
Costco came out on top for 14 out the 15 products.
This comes after Consumer champion Which? named Aldi as the cheapest supermarket in November.
A basket of groceries cost £121.33 on average across the month.
The discount was £1.13 cheaper than rival Lidl, which was named cheapest supermarket in the monthly analysis in October.
At the other end of the scale, a 70-item basket at Waitrose totalled £166.79.
