Champions League LIVE: Newcastle face Barcelona & Man City play Napoli after Simeone ARGUES with a FAN in Liverpool loss

PSG hitting the European heights

For so long, Paris Saint-Germain were viewed as the also-rans in Europe; there or thereabouts but never good enough to top the charts.

But under Luis Enrique, the Parisians were crowned Europe’s best in May, and show no signs of stopping this time around.

PSG have won 11 of their last 13 Champions League matches (L2), netting two or more goals in 10 of those matches.

And since the start of December when that run began, no side has won more matches or scored more goals (39) in the competition.

Throughout the calendar year of 2025, the Ligue Un club have scored 36 goals across their 11 Champions League games.

Their average of 3.27 goals per match during that time is only bettered by Bayern Munich in 2020 (3.36) in the competition’s history over a calendar year.

Palmer: We have ourselves to blame

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer lit up the Allianz Arena with a brilliant goal, but afterwards stated that his side shot themselves in the foot.

The Blues went down 3-1 to Bayern, conceding through an own goal, a penalty, and another when they were caught in possession trying to play out from the back.

But while Palmer admitted he and his teammates were at fault, the England international was adamant that the Premier League club were playing at that level on merit.

I thought we played well. We’ve shown we deserve to play here. The three goals we conceded were our own fault. We had chances. We broke them down well but some chances we missed. They’re a good team. We deserved better than what we got.

Prolific Kane in elite company

In victory over Chelsea, Harry Kane scored his 20th and 21st Champions League goals for Bayern Munich.

Having also netted 21 for Tottenham in the competition, he has become only the third player to score 20+ goals for two different clubs in the Champions League.

The other two? Cristiano Ronaldo (105 for Real Madrid and 21 for Manchester United) and Neymar (22 for PSG and 21 for Barcelona).

Liverpool leave it late again

Virgil van Dijk’s winner was the fourth goal that Liverpool have scored in the 90th minute (or later) across all competitions this season – at least twice as many as any other Premier League team.

Six of their eight second half goals in 2025-26 have now been scored from the 88th minute onwards.
