Chelsea vs PSG: Over 3.5 goals
The hosts have a mountain to climb if they want to keep their European ambitions alive. The weekend performance and result to a much-changed Newcastle side continued their recent struggles, with just one win in their last six games after 90 minutes. The collapse in the final quarter of an hour in Paris will be most concerning.
Will they huddle round and “respect the ball” ahead of kick-off? Who knows. But after five goals in the game at Villa, six at Wrexham and SEVEN in the first leg, that same ball could be picked out the net plenty here. PSG’s last eight games have brought 33 goals at a higher than 4 per game average – even with a 1-0 in there. Goals, goals, goals.
Man City vs Real Madrid: Over 3.5 goals
Inconsistency, scoring goals but conceding plenty and a mountain to climb in Europe. It’s almost a copy and paste from Chelsea to describe Manchester City, who looked to have closed the gap down to Arsenal in the league before back-to-back horror results against Nottingham Forest and West Ham. That leaves them really just chasing cups but they need a mammoth second leg if that includes Europe.
Nobody seen the 3-0 defeat at the Bernabeu coming, with all three goals coming in that first half. Now with just one win in four, City need to outscore a Madrid side with nine goals in their last three games. Osasuna and Getafe have been the Spanish giants within their last six games so City must take confidence from that but an all-out attacking performance could make this a ridiculously open tie.
Barcelona vs Newcastle: Both teams to score
You can only imagine the sickening feeling in the Newcastle dressing room last week when the referee played on and on beyond the four added minutes before awarding Barca a penalty late on. Even though a 1-1 draw with the Catalan side is a top result, it prevented an historic result in the Toon’s European history.
But the goal on the counter attack to beat Chelsea at the weekend could well come into play here, with Anthony Gordon back fit and Eddie Howe sending out a second string side to beat the Blues in the capital, leaving several key men fresh for here. The high line Barca played away from home must be even higher in their own backyard and Newcastle’s pace in the forward areas will cause all kinds of problems.
Liverpool v Galatasaray: 1st half over 1.5 goals
Like the rest of the English sides in this competition, failing to get through here could see Liverpool’s end to the season unravel. One win in their last four which came in the cup at toiling Wolves isn’t great reading for Arne Slot but the only positive is they’re still in this tie despite being outplayed by the Turkish side for much of the first leg.
It’s just a 1-0 deficit to recover from and the Reds have scored nine first half goals in their last six home goals, which also included a blank at home, so they have to put that dismal display against Spurs behind them to try and save their campaign. Could be another wide-open clash.
Bayern Munich vs Atalanta: Home goals over 2.5
Like several of the ties this midweek, the second leg here doesn’t mean too much as Bayern bring home a 6-1 lead from Italy last week. They’ve only lost one game since November and will safely secure their passage through. A chance to also make some changes after dropping points at Leverkusen over the weekend and finishing the game with nine men.
Atalanta conceded just once at Inter at the weekend but prior to that conceded at least two goals in four successive matches to Bayern, Udinese, Lazio and Sassuolo. The daunting trip to Germany was made more so with that crushing defeat last week and another thumping Bayern victory could see double digits in the aggregate.
