Center-Left Democrats Have to Open Their Eyes to the Reality of Modern Democrats – HotAir

I get a lot of pushback when I distinguish between liberals and leftists, ordinary center-left Democrats, and where the center of gravity is in the Democratic Party.

I get the anger, but I will continue to make that distinction. Suppose one has spent a lifetime as a Democrat or liberal at a time when their main causes were increasing the social insurance programs, environmentalism, and criminal rehabilitation. In that case, it is difficult to grasp that the modern Democratic Party is lurching toward revolutionary Marxism.

In fact, it sounds absurd. Just as absurd as believing that the FBI, which spent decades under J. Edgar Hoover, is a left-wing Stasi, or that the CIA is radically left-wing. It is much easier to see people like Zohran Mamdani, AOC, Bernie Sanders, and the millions of protesters in the streets burning things down as fringe.

Of course, you and I believe that the older version of liberals were naive and don’t understand how the world works, or how corrupt the Democratic political machines have always been, but that is a separate issue from the ideological commitments of liberals. We saw Bill Clinton vacuuming up money from the Chinese and grifting off the pain and suffering of Haitians, but most liberals thought that those scandals were made up because they trusted the media.

The thing is, modern Democrats don’t even really hide their radicalism. Kathy Hochul endorsed a literal communist, Zohran Mamdani, and the entire Democratic Party establishment backed the George Floyd riots, declaring racism a public health emergency and riots a necessary means of fighting it. They talk of decolonizing America and the West, push sterilization and mutilation of children as necessary health care, and half of Democrats believe that assassinating Trump and Elon Musk would be morally justified.

When Luigi Mangione assassinated Brian Thompson, not only did leftists rally around him, but we were treated to lectures by “mainstream” Democrats explaining that violence was never justified, but it sorta is. Mangione is a sex symbol to millions, and doctors and teachers are busy explaining to us why Charlie Kirk deserved to die and building hit lists of other conservatives.

Nothing speaks louder than the Democrats’ unwillingness to condemn the murder of Charlie Kirk in Congress. Over half refused to vote for a measure honoring him, and before that, many of them shouted to object to an oral prayer for his soul.

The New York Times ran straight to Hasan Piker, who regularly calls for the blood of Republicans to flow in the streets, to comment on Charlie Kirk’s death. It doesn’t occur to them that this is not only insulting, but normalizing political violence. Or perhaps they are just fine with that.

Many of the people who give a pro forma “I don’t approve of violence” comment right after an assassination have directly called for our deaths in the recent past.

Even non-insane Democratic Party politicians are becoming scared of their base, mostly because their base wants them to fight to the death–literally–against Republicans.

We are not arguing about tax rates, foreign policy, and the size of the welfare state. The current argument in the United States is between radicals and normal people.

Ordinary Democrats have been sucked into a vortex where they see the conflict and violence, and they are led to believe that the originators of that violence are Republicans. Joe Biden gives a speech staged by Leni Riefenstahl in which he declares you and I to be enemies of the state, and too many Democrats take that at face value.

My point? Do normal Democrats want to defend those teachers, nurses, lawyers, judges, and politicians who cheer on assassinations? Because right now, those are their allies.

Almost every one of them has seen one or more of their friends trash Charlie Kirk and either implicitly or explicitly celebrated his death. How does that sit with them?

After the COVID fiasco, in which our elite showed themselves to be totalitarian and a plurality of Democrats told pollsters that they wanted to put vaccine skeptics in concentration camps and take away their children, most of those normal people shrugged and said that their compatriots who said that were just trying to do good, even if their means were a bit harsh.

Yeah, well, no. That is what totalitarians say about their motives, too. Nobody says that they are out to do evil. Look at what they do, not their excuses for why they do it.

I am under no illusions that center-left people are obligated to become Republicans, although many have in recent years as they woke up to the moral corruption of the left. Some of the most influential conservative influencers, or should I say MAGA influencers, who are a slightly different, if overlapping group, are former liberals. Many of them are, ironically, very outspoken gays, giving the lie to the “homophobic” accusation.

Jillian Michaels and Dave Rubin, I am looking at you…

At the very least, they should quit giving cover and making excuses for the excesses of their party. They should stand up to the insanity. They should quit donating to the Party and ActBlue.

One out of four very liberal people say they approve of using violence for political purposes.

I understand why center-left people find Trump and MAGA repulsive. I honestly do. But that doesn’t justify aligning yourself with people who openly say that killing the President or his allies is justified, and that is half of all Democrats.

Half. I didn’t make that number up. Rutgers University — known for its “experts” we are often advised to listen to — did the research.

Overall, “very liberal” people are 8X more likely to approve of political violence than very conservative people–the exact opposite of what Pravda keeps telling us.

I don’t know what the breaking point is for any particular person is or should be, but in my experience, most center-left people are kind, decent, and wish people well. Given that, I would have expected that for them it would have been some time, several years ago. The Democratic Party celebration of the “Summer of Love” would have been a breaking point for me, but YMMV.

Or, perhaps, when the Deputy Chair of the Democratic Party posted this on his social media:

YMMV, but after the outburst of joy at the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the muted response (or worse) of Democratic leaders to his murder, you would hope that more people would peel off and say “enough.” Even if their response is not to walk away from their party–which I can understand–a full-bore attempt to take it back is the least one could do.

Otherwise, one is complicit. Speak up. Criticize. Express outrage. Demand better.
