Car explodes in Washington DC as black smoke billows through sky

A car has reportedly exploded in Washington DC, sending plumes of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

A witness said it was a black Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that went up in flames after the explosion on 23rd Street South.

Nearby buildings did not catch fire. 

The smoke could be seen from the other side of the city in the northeast suburbs.
