Captaincy options and Booster strategies for Gameweek 6 with all eyes on Erling Haaland

MANY Dream Team managers will consider the captaincy conversation a non-starter for Gameweek 6.

Erling Haaland (£7.7m) is the game’s top performer having raced to seven goals and this weekend he’s due to face to Burnley, who have conceded 35 goals across their last eight visits to the Etihad.

Factor in an additional midweek fixture against Monaco in the Champions League and it seems like a no-brainer; captain Manchester City’s No9 and watch the points roll in.

Truth be told, it probably is as simple as that.

Pep Guardiola set the cat among the pigeons in the week when he explained to reporters that Haaland is hampered by a back injury but the prolific poacher was pictured in training on Thursday and is expected to start on Saturday.

It’s possible his workload is managed to some degree but on current form it wouldn’t be that surprising if he bagged a hat-trick against the Clarets within the first half and hour, with all due to respect to Scott Parker’s side.

Dream Team bosses will hope for another update from Guardiola when he speaks to the media later today but at this stage Haaland is the most popular captain by a wide margin.

Almost 50% of gaffers don’t own the Norwegian striker at the time of writing and many of them will be sticking the armband on Mohamed Salah (£7.3m) ahead of Liverpool’s meetings with Crystal Palace and Galatasaray.

Both games are away fixtures and with the Eagles on a long unbeaten run and a hostile atmosphere brewing in Istanbul, it’s not the most favourable double header the Egyptian superstar will ever have but he’s never too far away from a juicy double digit-haul.

For those who like to think outside the box, the possibility of captaining an Arsenal defender may appeal.

The Gunners travel to St James’ Park this weekend before welcoming Olympiakos to the Emirates in midweek.

Newcastle away wouldn’t usually be a fixture to target but the Magpies are struggling for goals at the moment — only Aston Villa have scored fewer league goals this season.

The likes of Jurrien Timber (£5.2m), Gabriel (£5.2m), William Saliba (£5.3m) and Riccardo Calafiori (£4.4m) will be hopeful of keeping two clean sheets this coming Gameweek, which would yield substantial returns.

Elsewhere, there’s probably a worthy captain lurking at Spurs as their double header looks very favourable on paper: Wolves (h) and Bodo/Glimt (a).

But we cannot stress enough that Haaland, assuming he’s fit, is the obvious choice for a reason.

Some managers will see Gameweek 6 as an opportune time to play a Booster.

If your team is stacked with attacking threats and tailored to the European double headers – nine Premier League teams are set to pull double duty – then the temptation to activate Goal Bonus will be strong.

Alternatively, if you’re among the 46.6% of gaffers without Haaland then it might be wise to select him as your 12th Man.

Whatever strategy you land on for Gameweek 6, remember to lock it in before Saturday’s 11am deadline.
