While we tend to associate red carpets with pristine glamour, A-listers have recently adopted a more laid-back approach and blasé attitude when it comes to ironing.
In looks that some of our grandmothers are sure to have raised their eyebrows at, celebrities have attended premieres and other high-profile events.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, British fashion designer Amanda Wakeley OBE explained that the look is, bizarrely, far from a mistake. She said: ‘After years of everything looking aggressively pressed and perfect, fashion has relaxed a little.
‘Since Covid-19, many of the old-fashioned rules have softened anyway. People got used to being comfortable in their clothing, and more at ease, and that attitude has carried through into how we dress still now.
‘Quite a few savvy celebrities also choose fabrics that are designed to crinkle or hold texture, such as clever silks, technical blends or linens that crease beautifully, and so the look feels relaxed while still being completely intentional. Plus it is a trend that was seen on many designer runways from Erdem to Calvin Klein.’
Read on to discover how some of the world’s biggest stars are committing fashion faux pas while attending major events.
Meghan Markle
Pristine clothes once ruled school – but now stars are ditching the iron in favour of creased clothes. Pictured: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex at a World Health Organisation roundtable in Jordan last month
The Duchess of Sussex is known for her glamorous, high-fashion ensembles, but she opted for a more understated style when she travelled to Jordan with Prince Harry last month.
Meghan, 44, pulled off a series of neutral, casual, and noticeably creased looks for the Sussexes’ quasi-royal tour, including this khaki ensemble.
The mother of two opted for a pair of wide-leg, high-waisted trousers with a matching short-sleeved T-shirt and a white shirt worn as a jacket as she travelled to a Syrian refugee camp with Prince Harry.
With no entourage (Meghan is known to largely style her own hair, makeup and wardrobe), and likely no 6ft ironing board of her own like Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor preferred to have on hand, the Duchess’s trousers understandably looked creased.
But Meghan clearly had no time to worry about the rogue wrinkles as she instead proudly focused on her important work in Jordan.
Katie Holmes
Katie Holmes’s satin ensemble at the Aligne Giving Tuesday Holiday Dinner at Chateau Royale in December last year suffered from creases
Katie Holmes’s lingerie-inspired burnt orange set looked incredible – if in need of a steam press.
She was dressed in Aligne’s £85 satin top and matching skirt with a lace trim that retails for £129 when she attended a holiday dinner at Chateau Royale.
Katie, 47, was radiant as she attended an event for clothing brand Aligne in New York last December, but it appeared the Dawson’s Creek star rushed out without checking for creases.
Considering that satin creases easily, however, it’s also possible that the dishevelled styling choice wasn’t intentional.
Gwyneth Paltrow

She rarely puts a foots wrong when it comes to fashion, but Gwyneth Paltrow’s creased trousers at the BAFTA Tea Party in January might’ve raised some eyebrows.
The wellness guru arrived at the event, held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles, and paired an elegant black blazer with trousers so creased it must’ve been intentional.
It’s just one of Paltrow’s looks that has set tongues wagging in recent times – and earlier this month, her plunging V-neck dress made headlines.
The 53-year-old made her first appearance at the Actor Awards in 26 years on the evening of March 2 in Los Angeles.
She turned heads in a plunging black lace Givenchy gown paired with 1930s Belperron turquoise earrings.
For her appearance, the Iron Man star once again relied on her trusty go-to number of a deep V-neckline, teamed with a cinched waistline and no sleeves.
It’s an attention-grabbing look that Gwyneth has perfected over the years – from wearing a plunging red velvet Tom Ford suit for the 1996 VMAs to collecting her Academy Award in a voluminous V-neck pink Ralph Lauren gown in 1999.
Jessie Buckley
Irish actress Jessie Buckley sported a crinkled dress at the premiere of Hamnet in New York last year
And while she pulled out some showstoppers this year, back in December 2025, there was one look that looked less high-glamour and more like it needed a good old iron.
The 36-year-old was at the premiere of Hamnet at Delphi Filmpalast on December 8 when she debuted a satin shirt dress, but unfortunately, the outfit’s crinkles served as a big distraction.
Luckily, Buckley has upped her game in recent times, and she’s donned a dazzling array of ensembles at events including the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.
Geri Halliwell
Geri Halliwell’s dress featured light creases at the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey earlier this month
Geri Halliwell is known for her newfound love of pristine living, but even she’s fallen victim to wearing creased clothes in recent times.
The former Spice Girl stepped out of the car at the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey earlier this month in a belted cream dress.
While the frock was undoubtedly perfect for the occasion, it featured creases across the skirt.
The singer, now 53, was affectionately known as Ginger Spice in her heyday due to her unmissable bright red tresses – having landed a role in the band alongside Mel C, Emma Bunton, Victoria Beckham and Mel B following brief stints on TV and as a raunchy page 3 girl.
Her time in the girl group constantly grabbed headlines – be it for her head-turning looks, including the Union Jack mini-dress, or claims of a lesbian fling with bandmate Mel B.
Turning her hand to baking, writing children’s books and attending all manner of royal events, Geri has managed to completely overhaul her image far from her outrageous Spice Girl days.
Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson joined the trend when attending a ceremony in Los Angeles alongside Samuel L. Jackson and John Davis.
Instead of her usually pristine ensembles, the Hollywood actress, 46, wore a creased olive dress.
The satin material of Hudson’s dress is one that crumples easily during wear, but she appeared totally unphased as she posed for cameras at the event.
All eyes are currently on the actress, thanks to her BAFTA nomination for her role in Song Sung Blue.
25 years after being nominated in the same category as Almost Famous’s Penny Lane, Kate will this time go head-to-head against Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Renate Reinsve and Emma Stone.
Song Sung Blue sees Kate starring as Claire Sardina, who alongside her partner Mike (played by Hugh Jackman), found love and success performing as the Neil Diamond tribute band Lightning & Thunder – based on a true story.
Greta Gerwig

Greta Gerwig’s fuchsia dress at the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival at Palais des Festivals in May 2024 served as a perfect example of how stars are intentionally opting for creased clothes.
For the event, the American director, 42, sported a showstopping Balenciaga ball gown, which featured creasing as a style statement, and long, dramatic gloves.
And while the frock wasn’t crease-free, Gerwig made a lasting impression on the red carpet.
Gerwig is a distinctive voice in contemporary cinema, and has directed blockbusters like Barbie, Lady Bird and Little Women.
