AN M&S Christmas pigs in blankets mac and cheese dish looks set to be the highest-calorie ready meal on Britain’s supermarket shelves.
The “oozy, indulgent festive mash-up” comes in at 1,402 calories if eaten by one person.
And even if shared by two — as its packaging suggests — its 18.4g of saturated fat per serving is 92 per cent of the daily recommended intake.
The calorie count for the whole 750g meal is just 600 short of a woman’s suggested healthy daily intake.
Men are advised to eat 2,500 a day.
The previous record-holder for Britain’s highest-calorie pre-packaged meal is thought to have been another M&S product — a wood-fired pizza with buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil — which contained 1,144 calories.
Customers can buy the new limited-edition freezable pigs in blankets mac and cheese meal for £9.50.
M&S’s website says the festive dish “is smothered in creamy mozzarella and melted cheddar, dotted with pork sausages double-wrapped in a whole rasher of bacon, and topped with a smoked bacon, cheese and cranberry crumb”.
Macaroni cheese is typically one of the highest-calorie supermarket items on sale.
M&S said: “Our Pigs in Blankets Mac & Cheese is a limited-edition Christmas product that serves two people and is positioned as a festive treat.
“At M&S we believe in balanced diets and everything in moderation – of which there is room for more indulgent meals and sweet treats.
“All of our meals are clearly labelled (unlike in takeaways and restaurants) and we provide all the nutritional information on pack enabling our customers to make an informed choice.
“For those looking to make healthier choices they need only look for products with the Eat Well flower seal of approval on pack – these products support a balanced lifestyle as endorsed by the British Nutrition foundation.”
