In fact, with this handy item all you need to do is take a stroll around your garden.

Thanks to B&Q, you don’t even need to pick up a tool to carry out this step.

The shop are currently selling a pair of Lawn Aerator Shoes for just £8.50.

Measuring 300 mm by 132 mm, they can be attached to your shoes using buckle straps.

They have 26 spikes in total, which help to aerate your grass while you walk.

The product description explains: “Aerating lawns helps loosen soil to allow water, nutrients, and air penetrate through.”

To use, B&Q recommended simply strapping the aerators over your shoes and walking over the desired lawn area.

The experts at Lawn Love discussed the importance of lawn aeration and the best time to do it.

They described the technique as a “spa day for your lawn”.

By puncturing small holes in your lawn, you are helping nourish the root system.

“This process encourages roots to dig deeper beyond the topsoil, fostering their strength and resilience as they grow,” they explained.

“Over time, foot traffic, outdoor projects, and weather can compact your soil.

“Compacted soil leaves roots without room to grow and without air pockets to receive water, oxygen, and nutrients from the surface.”

The professionals described aerating your lawn as giving your grass a “breath of fresh air”.

Aerating has a wide variety of visible benefits when it comes to your lawn.

How to use lawn aerator shoes

The lawn aerator shoes are easy to use. Simply:

  • Attach the aerators to your regular shoes with the spikes facing downwards.
  • Walk across your lawn in your desired pattern, using your body-weight to push down the spikes
  • For more comprehensive aeration, repeat the process by overlapping your steps

Benefits to aeration:

  • Improves soil health by relieving compaction, enhancing air exchange, elevating drainage, and reducing thatch build-up
  • Enhances grass growth by promoting deeper roots, increasing nutrient availability, reducing stress, improving disease resistance, and reducing weed and moss growth

These include healthy roots, thicker grass, less compaction, better absorption, and weed control.

For quick grass recovery, gardening experts recommend aerating your lawn in late spring or early summer.

They advise against aerating at the peak of summer as the “high temperatures and potential lack of moisture can make recovery more challenging”.

For the best results, consider aerating your lawn when the soil is moist and before over-seeding.

Most lawns benefit from aeration if done every one to three years.
