An Iowa teenager was shot in the back of the head and killed after being mistaken for a squirrel while on a hunt.
Carson Ryan, 17, of Washington, died from his injuries after a member of his hunting party mistakenly shot him on Saturday in a rural area of Brighton.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) confirmed his death in a statement released on Monday saying he was rushed to hospital where he died from his injuries.
Captain Shawn Meier of the DNR’S Law Enforcement Bureau said the teenager had got up to move and his movement led one of the hunters to think he was a squirrel.
According to Meier, who spoke with KCRG, the environment in which the party was hunting in had played a role in the accident.
He said: ‘You have the sunlight coming in, shadows will start to creep in, you have other types of movement, whether it be wind, animals moving within the area.
‘It is important that hunters take that time to look through the area and make sure what they’re seeing is the target they’re going to shoot at.’
After the news of his passing broke, social media was inundated with memorial posts for the teenager, who was a budding football player and athlete.
