Footage on social media from Birmingham showed a police van being pelted with fireworks.

Sparks were seen ricocheting off the vehicle as its driver attempted to reverse away.

Four teenage boys were arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of “violent disorder” late on Wednesday.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said the force had made several arrests and seized weapons around the Dale End area of the city centre.

A Section 60 order, which allowed police to stop and search people without the need for reasonable grounds, was imposed until 6am this morning.

Meanwhile, a third-floor balcony in Liverpool was set on fire after it was hit by pyrotechnics.

Yobs then aimed at police and firefighters as they arrived at the chaotic scene.

Both police and fire service crews were targeted by thugs as they attended the fire at a high rise block of flats in Huyton, a town about six miles east of Liverpool.

A female police officer’s leg was injured during the incident.

Merseyside Police said in a statement that they arrested a 14-year-old boy on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after emergency services were called to Knowsley Heights on Primrose Drive in Huyton.

The teenager is currently still in custody, said cops.

But brave firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze despite fireworks being hurled at them.

Chief Inspector Kevin Chatterton said: !We will not tolerate this type of disgraceful behaviour, particularly when it involves emergency services staff being targeted in such a way.

“It is only by sheer good fortune that nobody was seriously injured.

“Officers were quickly at the scene and spoke to a number of youths and parents to advise them about their behaviour.

“One teenage male was arrested and will be questioned.”
