Tottenham vs Sunderland preview
Draw specialists Sunderland make the 265-mile trip to north London for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Tottenham.
The Black Cats have drawn each of their last three league matches since beating arch-rivals Newcastle, leaving them seventh at the halfway stage with 29 points.
They’re now priced at just 13/8 for a top-half finish, while relegation is considered highly unlikely at 50/1 with Betfair.
Sunderland’s lofty position owes much to their rock-solid defence, having conceded just 18 goals in 19 matches with only Arsenal and Manchester City shipping fewer.
That defensive resolve has been essential, too, given their attacking struggles on the road.
The Black Cats have scored just four goals in nine away league games this season, failing to find the net on six occasions. In fact, Sunderland have failed to score in 17 of their last 26 Premier League away matches.
That’s something they’ll need to fix quickly against a Tottenham side they’ve historically struggled against, having lost 14 of their 16 Premier League away games at Spurs.
As for Tottenham, goals haven’t exactly been flowing either.
Thomas Frank’s side arrive on the back of a goalless draw with Brentford and have scored just twice in their last four league matches. They sit 12th, seven points adrift of the Champions League places, and must address their struggles at home.
Spurs lost a staggering 11 home league games in 2025, their most in a single calendar year, and have also lost their opening home league game in five of the last seven years.
That said, history still favours the hosts. Tottenham are unbeaten in their last 14 Premier League meetings with Sunderland and have scored in 61 of their last 62 league games against promoted sides.

A clash between two sides struggling for goals but defensively solid points towards under 2.5 goals, priced at 4/5 with Betfair.
As mentioned, Sunderland have scored just four goals in nine away league games this season, yet their defensive record can rival even the elite – including Manchester City and Arsenal.
The Black Cats have kept three clean sheets in their last four matches, while Spurs have managed two, and the numbers back it up. Over the last four weeks, the sides rank eighth and ninth respectively for expected goals conceded (xGC).
Going forward, neither side is firing. Tottenham boast the lowest expected goals from open play of any Premier League side (1.89), with Sunderland not far behind in fourth (2.41).
