Leeds and Chelsea renew hostilities at Elland Road in the Premier League on Wednesday.
We may only be 13 matches into the 2025–26 campaign, but this already has a ‘must-win’ feel for the hosts’ survival prospects – and for manager Daniel Farke.
Leeds began the season reasonably well, collecting eight points from their opening six games, including wins over Everton and Wolves and credible draws against Newcastle and Bournemouth.
But October triggered a nosedive.
Leeds have lost six of their last seven league matches, conceding 16 goals, scoring just six, and slipping into the bottom three.
However, Saturday’s spirited showing in their 3-2 defeat at Manchester City proved there is still plenty of fight in Farke’s squad.
Leeds battled back from a two-goal deficit at the Etihad, only to be undone by a heartbreaking Phil Foden winner in stoppage-time.
If they can replicate that second-half display, they’ll have a chance of a result against a Chelsea side who have won just six of their 48 league visits to Elland Road (D13 L29).
As for the visitors, they arrive sitting comfortably in third after Sunday’s 1-1 draw with leaders Arsenal.
It was an excellent result for Enzo Maresca’s side, who played the majority of the match with 10 men following Moises Caicedo’s first-half dismissal, and it extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions.
There is further reason for optimism in the Chelsea camp: they have won five of their last six away matches and have lost just two of their last 17 evening Premier League kick-offs (W12 D3).
