England vs Japan preview

England are back in action tonight… much to the disappointment of those who endured Friday’s draw with Uruguay.

The Three Lions failed to extend their six-game winning streak after a stoppage-time penalty from Federico Valverde levelled things up, in a clash few will want to remember.

Thomas Tuchel is perhaps left with more questions than answers after the physical, stop-start encounter, but a more fluent display is expected with a few ‘big guns’ returning to the starting XI for the visit of Japan.

Harry Kane is expected to spearhead the attack, with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Marc Guehi, Elliot Anderson and Morgan Rogers also back in contention.

But it’s still not ideal for Tuchel.

No fewer than eight players have left the camp, including Arsenal trio Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke. Adam Wharton, John Stones, Fikayo Tomori, Aaron Ramsdale and Dominic Calvert-Lewin are also back with their clubs.

The assignment is more about preparation for this summer’s World Cup, which kicks off in less than 80 days – but a win would be welcome after Friday’s draw, even if the signs are mixed.

England are unbeaten in their three games against Japan, but have won just two of their last seven friendly matches.

An Asian nation has never beaten England in 10 attempts (D4 L6) – this is England’s first game against an Asian side since a 6-2 win over Iran at the 2022 World Cup.

As for the visitors, they arrive having beaten Scotland 1-0 in an equally lacklustre clash at Hampden over the weekend.

Japan are now unbeaten in their last seven matches against European nations in all competitions (W6 D1), winning each of their last three against Germany, Turkey and Scotland.
