With the festive countdown almost at zero, the final preparations for Christmas are being made.

The lights are up, the Christmas wreath has been placed, presents wrapped and agreements about who’s hosting the in-laws this year have happened. The next thing to tick off the list is the final Christmas food shop.

But with ideas about gorgeous turkeys, delicious sprouts and sublime mince pies, it can be a stressful figuring out which supermarket offers the best deals to impress family and friends.

Tesco seriously impressed with its festive offering
Waitrose wowed us with its sides and sauce

Tesco tops our list for the best festive foods but not all our favourites came from the retail giant

Whether you tuck in to a traditional lunch at 1pm or pull Christmas crackers in the evening, we have tried and tested everything from salmon starters to dazzling desserts to find out which supermarket has the best festive offerings this year.

So rather than traipse around each supermarket, pushing a squeaking trolley and a grasping a heavily edited list, you can rely on our handy guide. And it’s proof you don’t need to spend a fortune on posh Christmas food either, with supermarket prices starting from under £3.

Best supermarket Christmas food: Quick list

How we test

All of the food, drink and products we review at the Daily Mail go through a rigorous testing process.

As well as looking at what classic Christmas foods offered the best price, we considered how easy they were to cook, whether they offered an exciting flavour experience and would they take on the mantle of dinner table show-stopper.

Every product was cooked or served according to the instructions and taste tested by our reviewer. You can read more about our testing methodologies across all product categories.

The best supermarkets for Christmas food in 2025

Tesco Finest Scottish Salmon Terrine 510g

Tesco Finest Scottish Salmon Terrine 510g

What we love

  • CentrepieceWorked amazingly well as a showstopper for the table and guests were impressed

  • No faffThe ready to go terrine meant I didn’t have to faff around with making up individual portions

What could be better

  • TextureThe texture was a little cloying if you ate a lot but nothing to put you off

Review

This is one of the most delicious fish dishes I’ve had in some time.

Forget a plate of smoked salmon – Tesco’s Scottish smoked salmon terrine included a lemon mousse and was packed with flavour.

The addition of the salmon mousse and lemon and herb marinated cooked king prawns in the centre made it more than just a show-stopper ad there were audible gasps when I put it down on the tale.

It’s made for sharing and meant I wasn’t having to individually portion anything out – it just went in to the centre of the spread and people helped themselves.

While it might look a little retro, I thought it was the better for it and tasted incredible although I would say with the mouse it had a slightly cloying texture but otherwise it was delightful.

Tesco Finest Three Bird Pâté

Tesco Finest Three Bird Pâté

What we love

  • DecadentThis pate felt decadent and impressive and looked beautiful on the plate

  • Belly fullIt served more than the suggested ten on the packet so better for larger gatherings

What could be better

  • Cranberry sauceThe addition of the cranberry was too sweet for me and sometimes felt overpowering

Review

Three birds for the price of one – how could you refuse?

Tesco’s Finest pate is a mixture of duck liver, chicken liver and turkey breast, topped with pork fat and smoked chestnuts and layers of cranberry and redcurrant gel between each layer.

Not only was it tasty served with tasty triangles of toast but it was filling and moreish.

While I wasn’t a personal fan of the cranberry jelly and the sweetened dried cranberries on top, I could appreciate their pleasant contrast with the richness of the meats.

£8 for 375g Tesco claims it can serve 10 – but I found I had loads left over so perhaps this is a dish worth presenting to a large family gathering.

Waitrose Christmas Cranberry Sauce

Waitrose Christmas Cranberry Sauce

What we love

  • Christmas in a jarThe addition of spices and orange made the sauce feel like Christmas in a jar

What could be better

  • TextureThe texture was a little gloopy for my liking

Review

Sometimes it’s the smallest elements that prove the star of the show and never was that truer than with Waitrose’s cranberry sauce.

Made with cranberries, orange zest, clove and cinnamon, the depth of flavour was perfect with the savoury dinner.

I liked the introduction of the almost mulled-wine elements to it and it felt more Christmassy than most versions.

While I didn’t choose to, it would also lend itself nicely to cheese and crackers.

For only £3 a jar, it’s the perfect Christmas investment but my only qualm might be the texture which was a little gloopy for my liking.

Waitrose Honey Roasted Chantenay Carrots500g

Waitrose Honey Roasted Chantenay Carrots500g

What we love

  • Easy to cookThe carrots were easy to cook and came out tasting lovely and saved me time and effort

  • Sweet like honeyThe honey element was delicious and while possibly a little on the sweet side, they were a nice way to jazz up my veg

What could be better

  • ShrinkageThey did shrink in the oven and while they still looked dainty, they were slightly disappointing in size

Review

Waitrose’s honey roasted carrots were a godsend during the tumult of the Christmas dinner cooking.

Rather than having to blanche and roast the carrots myself, I could stick these in the oven and they popped out steaming and tasty.

While the carrots did shrink a little in the oven, they were still sweet and looked even cuter in a little side dish being passed around the dinner table.

The honey-roasted element wasn’t something I’d tried before but worked well although, the carrots were perhaps a little too sweet.

However, for £2.25 for 500g, it’s a no-brainer and a nice way to spice up boring boiled veg.

Exceptional by ASDA 10 Hot Maple Pigs in Blankets 210g

Exceptional by ASDA 10 Hot Maple Pigs in Blankets 210g

Hot Maple Pigs in Blankets

What we love

  • PriceGreat value for 10 sausages

  • TasteThese were delicious

What could be better

  • SweetBest for those with a sweet tooth

Review

Asda’s Exceptional pigs in blankets are certainly that – tasty and exciting. The hot maple syrup with a touch of chilli re-invents the Christmas dinner staple while the quality of the sausage meat and bacon finish the little morsel off nicely. My only qualm? Asda may have leaned a tad on the sweet side honey might have made for a milder substitute.

At £3.97 for 10 – it’s quite the bargain but only for those with a very sweet tooth.

No.1 Stuffing Balls with Bacon, Smoked Chestnuts & Sage

No.1 Stuffing Balls with Bacon, Smoked Chestnuts & Sage

What we love

  • ImpressiveThe elements felt and tasted luxurious and were definitely a cut above the usual stuffing balls

What could be better

  • Sprinkled on topThe delicious ingredients weren’t woven throughout the balls but rather sprinkled on top so you weren’t guaranteed a mouthful of everything

Review

Waitrose took the classic sage and onion stuffing ball and elevated it.

Rather than tucking in to the usual version you can enjoy the pork-based stuffing balls topped with caramelised red onion, smoked chestnuts, and bacon lardons.

The re-imagined addition to the Christmas roast was delicious and different and was nicer than the other options on offer.

The only downside is that many of the most delicious flavours were splrinkled on top rather than incorporated meaning that the flavours didn’t always run all the way through.

At £8 for 12 stuffing balls, it’s not a cheap option but certainly worth the price if you’re bored of the classic variation.

Irish White Potatoes 2.5kg

Irish White Potatoes 2.5kg

What we love

  • Crispy and fluffyAfter a par-boil and a roast they became the perfect little roasties

Review

You might think vegetables from anywhere would be much of a muchness, but in fact Marks and Spencer’s white potatoes are a cut above the rest.

I par-boiled and then roasted them and they made the most delicious, fluffy and crunchy roasties I’ve had in a long time.

Easy to cut up and cook, they crisped up in the air fryer in an hour (such were the massive portion sizes I was dealing with) and were a perfect accompaniment to Tesco’s plump turkey.

Tesco Finest Beef Fillet Wellington 1kg

Tesco Finest Beef Fillet Wellington 1kg

What we love

  • FreezableFor those who like to plan in advance, they can sit safe in the knowledge that this freezes well

  • Looks the partMaking a beef Wellington from scratch is a faff but luckily this looked like the perfect showstopper

What could be better

  • Portion sizeIt won’t feed quite so many as a Turkey on Christmas Day – you can only get about four good servings from it

Review

Tesco’s beef Wellington is a delightful dish made of 21-day matured beef fillet, inside a beautifully crispy and golden pastry case.

The addition of the porcini mushrooms added a depth of flavour often lacking in beef Wellingtons.

The latticing of the pastry was pretty but the real boon was the ability the freeze the dish and cook from frozen (or at least I did) so I knew I could buy well in advance, safe in the knowledge that I could put on a showstopper – a delicious alternative to turkey.

At £35 for one, it’s not too bad, and tasty to boot but be advised it only serves four.

For a small Christmas with just myself and a partner it’s perfect but it wouldn’t feed the extended family however I wouldn’t let that stop me from tucking in to it over the festive period.

Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze Whole Turkey Medium 4-5.99kg

Tesco Finest Free Range Bronze Whole Turkey Medium 4-5.99kg

What we love

  • Price per kiloFor £11 per kilo it felt like a good deal and I’ve never had so much leftover

  • Nose to tailThe turkey came with its giblets which I was able to use to make traditional stuffing

What could be better

  • Cooking timeIt took considerably longer than the hour and a half stated to cook which threw my timings off

Review

For quality and price you can’t go far wrong than this turkey from Tesco.

The supermarket’s Finest range has once again pulled a blinder with their free range bronze turkey.

For £11 per kg it might seem steep but for a succulent turkey slice or two to feed the whole family, it’s certainly worth it – and I’ve got turkey to last a lifetime in the form of leftover, lunches and turkey sandwiches.

It was easy to cook although it took a little longer than the expected time of an hour and a half but with some careful basting the skin crisped up nicely.

The flavour was delicious and I was able to make home-made stuffing using the turkey giblets which came in a bag inside.

Knowing it was free range too made it taste better I’m sure.

Collection 12 Month Matured Christmas Pudding

Collection 12 Month Matured Christmas Pudding

What we love

  • BoozyWith the brandy and the cognac, the pudding was quite the boozy affair

  • RichBecause the pudding was so rich, guests didn’t seem to want huge portions meaning the pudding went further than planned

What could be better

  • Re-heatingThe pudding doesn’t taste quite so delicious re-heated – the texture became a little chewy

Review

I had no idea 12 months maturing a Christmas pudding could make such a difference, but Marks and Spencer has proved it is in fact worth it.

The steamed pudding, which was easy to heat up, was Indulgent and rich.

The dessert itself was was packed full of fruits, brandy-soaked cherries, Braeburn apple chunks, nuts, and then a splash of brandy and cognac for extra oomph.

I served mine with some brandy cream and a glass of wine making it an altogether boozy affair.

it would be equally as delicious with a cup of tea and was so rich I found the pudding went further than expected.

Cheesemonger Selection 900 g

Cheesemonger Selection 900 g

What we love

  • SelectionA great selection with something for everyone

What could be better

  • RatiosThe ratios were a bit off – there was a lot of blue cheese which was arguably the least favourite and not enough crowd-pleasing cheddar

Review

Unsure which cheese to go for to serve up to your guests after they claim they can eat now more?

Then pop Marks and Spencer’s Cheesemonger Selection in your basket.

I was very taken with the selection which took my mind of having to go round and choose cheese myself, peering at labels and trying to figure out what might go with what.

The selection box includes generous blocks of Red Leicester, Cornish Extra Mature Cheddar as well as Blue Stilton and Pave d’Affinois and then finally a Gouda.

There was something for everyone and made me look and feel like I’d put more effort (and money) in to the cheese course than I had.

Verdict

For the perfect balance of quality and cost, our favourite shop for Christmas food this year is Tesco. The brand had the widest selection of starters and mains loved by us and prices are reasonable too.

For your Christmas puds, we suggest heading to Marks and Spencer. Not only did we love the traditional Christmas pudding, the brand also has an excellent selection of cheeses – a Christmas essential.

Need a decent pud or perfect cheese board? Marks and Spencer have you covered

Which supermarket has the best Christmas cake?

Our taste tests revealed that Marks and Spencer has the best Christmas cake this year. It’s 12-month matured Christmas pudding comes in a variety of sizes for 4+ people and up. It’s available online at Ocado or in-store at Marks and Spencer.

When is the best time to buy Christmas food?

When buying online, we suggest booking a delivery slot as soon as possible and having that delivered as close to Christmas as possible.

If shopping in store, we suggest going in a few days before the big day to get your main bits. It can be tempting to try and buy everything in ahead of time, but we’ve seen enough tales of mould turkeys, whiffy cheese and limp vegetables to know that this isn’t always a good plan – especially if you’d rather not freeze your main ahead of time.
