Beat soaring chippy bills with these five low-cost DIY hacks to keep your Friday fish and chip treat on the menu

MANY of us celebrate the end of the working week with fish and chips.

But with the average portion now costing £10.78 at the chippy compared to £6.48 six years ago, these days, it’s more often a cook-at-home treat meal.

While it is hard to replace the taste of a proper chippy tea, try making your own with these low-cost tips.

NICE AND FREEZY: Cut the price of cod or haddock by buying frozen fillets which will be cheaper than fresh.

Save even more by swapping to other white fish, like pollock.

A BATTER PRICE: Making your own batter is easy and the ingredients cost pennies. You need a cup of flour,  cup of water,  teaspoon of baking powder and salt and pepper.

Alternatively, mix things up by dipping your fillets in flour, beaten egg then breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes.

If you are not a fan of deep-frying, use enough oil to come halfway up the fish fillets, then flip halfway through cooking

SHOP AND SERVE: You can buy battered fish fillets from the supermarket.

Get four Young’s Chip Shop Battered Cod Fillets from £6.98 at Asda, or have a look at grocery price comparison site trolley.co.uk to find the best price.

CHIP IN: It is easy to make your own chunky oven chips at home.

Start by cutting up your potatoes into chunks. Ideally, soak them in water for around 30 minutes, before par-boiling for five minutes. This will help them cook more evenly.

Next, toss the chips in one to two tablespoons of oil and cook in the oven at 220C for 30 to 35 minutes.

LIGHT AS AIR: You can save money on your cooking costs by using an air fryer

First, cook your chips and keep them warm before making a start on the fish. Cook it on full heat (around 200C) for approximately ten minutes, flipping halfway through.

Follow airfryer instruction for battered fish, or make things easier by cooking breadcrumbed fish instead.
