It is best to check the Morrisons store finder before setting out.

Asda Petrol Stations

Asda petrol stations offer the most consistent access of the supermarkets over the festive period, because their pay-at-the-pump systems generally remain active on Christmas Day.

While the physical kiosks and main stores will be closed on Christmas Day, drivers can still refuel as long as they pay by debit or credit card at the terminal.

Normal service with kiosk staff is expected to resume on Boxing Day.

Shell Petrol Stations

Many Shell petrol stations are open 24 hours a day and maintain this schedule through Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Motorway Shell sites are guaranteed to be open and available for fuel throughout the entire Christmas period.

Some smaller or franchised sites may choose to operate on reduced hours.

So, as always, checking the Shell service station locator is advisable for confirmation.

Supermarket fuel is highly popular, as it is often seen as a cheap and convenient option for drivers.

However, the RAC advised that drivers should plan ahead and check their local petrol stations, or the ones on the motorways they might be driving home for Christmas on.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Our analysis shows that while it’s cheaper on average to fill up at supermarkets, it’s also worth seeking out low-priced independent forecourts that can offer great value petrol and diesel.

“The best advice is to keep a close eye out for low prices on your normal routes, or better still, use the myRAC app to search for the best prices in your area.”
