MANCHESTER UNITED’S European hopes have created a financial dilemma around Andre Onana’s future.
United plan to sell Onana, who is currently on a season-long loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor.
With no obligation or option to make the move permanent, the Cameroon international is set to return to Old Trafford in July.
The Trabzonspor deal was partially aided by Onana’s automatic wage reduction at United, after the club failed to reach Europe for the 2025-26 campaign.
United players face a 25 per cent pay cut when they fail to qualify for the Champions League due to a standard contract clause designed to offset lost European revenue.
But with Michael Carrick‘s team third in the Premier League table and on course to reach the Champions League, Onana’s salary is set to return to its original level.
Sources close to Onana have told SunSport that the goalkeeper is determined to stay and fight for a place at Old Trafford next season.
The 30-year-old wants to battle United No1 Senne Lammens for a spot and is intrigued by the prospect of returning to play among Europe’s elite.
But insiders at United are concerned that the increase in salary will make it more difficult to generate interest in the former Inter Milan stopper.
It leaves United facing the possibility of paying a portion of Onana’s salary if they want to negotiate another move – either permanently or on loan.

Onana is under contract at United until 2028 and the club would require a fee of £19million to avoid a loss under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.
Former United head coach Ruben Amorim was displeased when Onana returned to Carrington last summer seeking a new contract, especially after his blunder in the Europa League final against Tottenham.
The Cameroonian stopper fell out of favour after patchy form last season, followed by a howler of a performance in the humiliating Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe identified Onana, along with Antony, Casemiro, Rasmus Hojlund and Jadon Sancho, as “inherited” players from the previous ownership, stating some were not good enough and overpaid.
All five players are set to be gone by the end of the upcoming summer window, with Napoli holding an obligation to buy Hojlund and Sancho’s contract expiring.
Club sources also expect back-up goalie Altay Bayindir to be sold after his error-strewn six-game run at the start of the campaign.
Besiktas are interested in signing Turkey international Bayindir, who joined United from Fenerbahce in 2023.
