Active shooter opens fire at synagogue near Baltimore

A gunman has opened fire on an Orthodox Jewish synagogue near Baltimore.

Shots rang out near the Agudath Israel of Baltimore in the city’s quiet Glen neighborhood just after 12.30pm Tuesday.

A Baltimore police officer was struck in the incident, the force said. The officer was transported to University of Maryland Medical Center’s Shock Trauma center.

The suspect has also been shot. Their condition is currently unknown.

Authorities have urged people to avoid the 6200 block of Park Heights Avenue and the surrounding area as they investigate the ‘active shooter incident.’

Footage captured by a local resident showed officers from multiple departments, included agents carrying assault-style weapons, descending on the synagogue.

Paramedics were also called to the scene, which appears to have been cordoned off by police.

The synagogue hosts daily services, including a 12.30pm mincha or afternoon prayer. It is unclear if Tuesday’s mincha was underway when shots rang out or how many people were in attendance.
