A Place In The Sun’s Danni Menzies reveals she had a ‘breakdown’ when her ex dumped her by text the day after she suffered a near-fatal accident

Danni Menzies has revealed she had a ‘breakdown’ over her ex as he dumped her by text the day after suffering a near-fatal accident.

The former A Place in the Sun host, 36, confessed that an ex left her when she ‘looked like Shrek’ following a horrific accident, which left her with needing 25 stitches.

She told Alex Serruys during The Sun’s Fabulous weekly vodcast she was hit by a moped and ended up in a ‘month-long concussion’.

Danni revealed the incident was so serious that it left her in a ‘month-long concussion’.

She was hit by the moped in October 2022 and underwent months of therapy to help overcome the emotional trauma of being injured.

But despite her horrific incident, Danni opened up about her ex, who did not support her and dumped her a day after.

She said: ‘I could have had brain damage or even died.

‘I was dating someone and he ended it the day after the accident via text, when I looked like Shrek.

‘That was pretty brutal- It hurt as much as the accident.’

Danni then explained that after suffering six months of heartache, she had a breakdown ‘over how she looked’.

First opening up on the accident, she posted a photo to social media showing her scar and said: ‘What hurt you once made you stronger. That’s what scars do.

‘They remind us of where we’ve been but they don’t have to dictate where we’re going.

‘When I first started posting after the accident I used an app to erase my scar. I hated the feelings it reminded me of.

‘I’ve been on a real journey with it all, so I’m very grateful to now be in a place that feels like the whole experience In the end has made me stronger.’

The Scots presenter also thanked the photographer who took the image, saying it captured her ‘in a way that makes it easier to share’.

The incident was said to have involved two women who stole the bike after a delivery driver parked it with the key still in the ignition.

Danni said at the time she suspected the joyriders were drunk when they lost control of the moped, which landed on its side on the pavement, colliding into her.

The incident saw her land face down, knocking her uncosncious and covered in blood.

In a previous interview, she recounted the horror saying: ‘My face took all the impact and I was massively in shock.

‘I kept saying, ‘My eye, my eye’, because I thought I had lost my right eye as I couldn’t see. It was scary.

‘I can remember waiting for the ambulance and hearing people saying: ‘We need to get her to hospital now.’

‘I kept losing consciousness so eventually they put me in the back of a police car and drove me to the hospital for a scan.’

Danni slowly began to get over the trauma with the help of laser treatment on her face, therapy, and alternative remedies such as sound baths.

She previously said: ‘I now realise that when you have an emotional trauma like this crash, your body holds it in your brain and you can’t fully explain how you feel.

‘But the therapist has helped me and rather than looking at the negatives, I now write down everything I’m grateful for.

‘I still occasionally get panic attacks but I don’t believe in living with regret. The crash has made me learn more about myself and I know that if you feel like crying, it is okay to do so. Above all else though, my family have been amazing. They have helped me so much.’

The TV star revealed earlier this year that she had undergone medical assessments of her fertility.

In a video breaking the news last year, she documented her visit to a clinic and vowed to answer questions from her fans about the process.

In a clip posted in January, she revealed the huge reaction she has had and given details of further tests she has undergone.

In a post shared with her 134,000 followers on Instagram, she said: ‘I’ve thought about freezing my eggs for a long time and I’m finally getting around to it, so here’s my latest update.

‘I never thought this was something I’d have to do but I’m also very grateful we live in a world where it’s possible to do so.

‘I hope by sharing my journey I can give an insight to the process, costs etc, and help a little with the stigma that there still seems to be around it.’

She added: ‘It’s kind of weird sharing this stuff because it is deeply personal but, you know what, I started last year and I have committed to it. It’s real life and it is important, so here we are.’

Danni, from Kenmore, Perthshire, said a lot of women had contacted her after she posted a video in December outlining her plans, including a clip of her undergoing an assessment at a clinic in London.

She said the women that got in touch told her the video was ‘really helpful and that they had been thinking about doing it’.

The personality said that a week after the video went online she had a consultation with a doctor at the clinic who discussed the results of her scan and blood tests.

She also said that the cost of the scans, blood tests and follow-up appointment came to around £500.

Danni added: ‘The next stage is to decide when you’re actually going to go through the process.

‘Something to bear in mind about that is that if you decide you want to do it in six months then you need to have bloods done within three months of going through the procedure.

‘So that is something you would need to pay for again and budget for.

‘So the next stage is to book in an appointment with the nurse. Now she basically talks you through how to use the medication and how it’s all going to go.’

Danni previously has said she hopes to challenge the stigma around fertility by discussing her own experience openly.

In her initial video last year, she said: ‘Always a funny one sharing such personal things on social media, however I also think it’s important to do so.

‘There’s a lot of stigma around starting later and freezing your eggs and I don’t think it’s something we should shy away from.

‘So I’ll be giving little updates on this over the next few months while I prepare and do one round of egg freezing.

‘If you’ve got any questions about it please do drop me or comment or DM and I’ll do my best to share anything that might be useful for you along the way.’

She has also previously discussed her reason for undergoing the tests, saying: ‘About three or four years ago I started worrying about my fertility because a few of my good friends were struggling to conceive naturally.

‘It was really, really, really weighing on my shoulders and I didn’t know where to start because I didn’t have time to go down the more traditional routes of doing all the appointments, getting your bloods done etc.’

She also touched upon her own hopes of having a family, stating that having piece of mind from fertility tests had ‘saved her sanity’.

She added: ‘I think there’s still a lot of stigma around having children later and freezing your eggs but the world’s quite a different place. Women are prioritising their career, people are settling down later and I don;t think there’s anything wrong with that. We live longer – why can’t we have children later?

‘The thing is, you can as long as you’re in the know with your body and where you’re at.’

The Scottish star co-hosted A Place In The Sun in 2016 and announced her departure from the programme last year.

She recently confirmed that she was single, stating that she was just enjoying life after a brief relationship with Love Island contestant Jay Younger, 30, from Edinburgh.

Posting photos from a trip to the Cayman Islands to see a friend last year, she wrote: ‘Things didn’t work out with Jay but that’s fine. Travelling a lot for work does make it trickier to meet someone.’

Prior to that relationship, she was involved with former soldier Simon Moloney. The pair met on a blind date that was set up by friends.

In a previous interview, she said she wasn’t sure about having children.

Danni had said: ‘I’m not saying I won’t, I’m just not sure. I really love travelling.’

She had added: ‘Even if I do get that country life I want, I still want to travel and work a lot. I am not 100 per cent on having kids, but I am 100 per cent on having lots of dogs and probably a rescue donkey as well – basically anything that needs a home.’
