Why that trendy oat milk latte may not be as healthy as you think

For Generation Z, it is a dietary fad as ubiquitous as avocado on sourdough.

But trendy oat milk may not be a healthier alternative to cows’ milk because it is highly processed and made up mainly of water, a leading expert has warned.

For oat milk to lower cholesterol, you would have to drink three glasses of it a day, according to Professor Sarah Berry, an expert in cardiovascular nutrition at King’s College London. That is around 750ml, far more than most consume.

Most supermarket oat milks are mainly water and only 10 per cent oats, Professor Berry said. These oats are extremely processed, to stop the ‘milk’ having too thick a texture, removing some of their cholesterol-lowering fibre and health benefits. Professor Berry told the Mail: ‘The exception is where people make their own oat milks at home, which can be healthy.’

Victoria Taylor, of the British Heart Foundation, said: ‘There is no nutritional reason to stop drinking cows’ milk.’
