Marks & Spencer call in spooks to probe if foreign crooks were behind cyber attack hitting shoppers

MARKS & Spencer is working with spooks to find out whether foreign criminals were behind a cyber attack that has caused trouble for shoppers.

It has called in the National Cyber Security Centre for help dealing with the disruption.

A NCSC spokesman said it was “working with Marks and Spencer to support its response to a cyber incident”.

The National Crime Agency has also said it has been involved.

Problems began at the weekend with customers unable to use contactless payments or receive click and collect orders

The retailer said on Tuesday a “cyber incident” was behind the disruption and it had called in cyber security experts.

It has since said online deliveries would be delayed — while pausing click and collect orders and stopping contactless payments being made.

Staff at the company’s London HQ were also told to stop using the building’s wifi.

It is understood M&S has moved some processes offline to protect against the cyber attack.

A spokeswoman for M&S declined to comment on whether it had been hit by ransomware or if customer data had been compromised.

Shoppers were assured on Tuesday that they did not need to take any action — and no further advice has been issued.
