Here, Karren gives advice to a reader who wants to transfer her skills from working in retail into a personal stylist job.

Q) I work in retail and enjoy interacting with the public, helping them find clothes they love and look great in.
While the hours work for me around the school run, the wage isn’t great.
So, I’ve been thinking about how I could use my skills to earn some extra money, and I’d love to go down the personal-styling route.
However, I don’t have a fashion degree or any formal qualifications in this area.

A) A career in fashion sounds like a perfect fit for you!
Don’t worry about not having a fashion degree – you already have a wealth of experience helping customers look and feel their best, and that will be a huge advantage in the styling world.
Start by exploring relevant roles on LinkedIn.
Even if you don’t meet all the qualifications, apply anyway – you never know what opportunities might come up.
Reach out to people you admire in the industry, asking for advice or whether they know of any opportunities to help you get started. You’d be surprised how many people are willing to help, especially if you show genuine passion and enthusiasm.
Build a portfolio on Instagram and TikTok, showcasing your style and expertise. These platforms are perfect for gaining momentum and connecting with potential clients or employers.
Attend fashion events and network as much as you can. The more you get your name out there, the more opportunities will come your way.
The fashion world is all about passion and hustle, and I’m sure you’ll find your place within it!
