Deontay Wilder suffers suspected broken hand in Derek Chisora fight and claims he ‘held back’ from going for KO

The former WBC world champion sent Chisora into retirement with a split-decision defeat at London’s O2 Arena.

Wilder only sat down to speak to the press at nearly 2am after undergoing drug tests and post-fight celebrations.

But the American suffered a hand injury during the bout – in which he wore Rival gloves for the first ever time.

A row over the gloves broke out one day before the fight with Wilder unable to wear the custom pair he first picked out.

But after beating Chisora over 12 chaotic and at times farcical rounds, he said: “I think I may have broken my hand or maybe have a small fracture in it.

“I’m able to move it. I’ve broken so many times, I know what it feels like and I know what it looks like.

“It may be it’s just a little bit swollen, but it may have a little smaller fracture.

“So when I get back home, we’ll do x-rays and stuff and see how it is. This is why I had a specific glove that I designed and I made.

“There was a lot of different situations with the gloves and stuff because I’ve been in this situation, this is my 50th fight.

“I done broke this hand so many different times and still have to fight inside of the ring and nobody understands what is, what it feels like to risk your life and then when you’re disabled in certain areas to still have to carry on with the fight.”

Wilder scored two knockdowns in the fight but had a point off for pushing in round eight.

Chisora also scored a knockdown himself in the 11th despite replays showing Wilder appearing to slip.

The 42-year-old British veteran had his wife Emily, daughters Angelina and Harare and one-year-old son Zion ringside.

And Wilder, 40, claimed they spared Chisora from being knocked out.

He said: “I held back a couple of times because I started thinking about him being with his children.

“When I saw veins coming out of his temple, I started thinking about, this is a dangerous sport.

“I felt a little sympathy for him. I even was talking to him, like, ‘Derek, come on, bro. We need to stop this, man. We need to stop this.’

“He didn’t say nothing. Then I started saying it again. ‘Come on, Derek.’ Then he said, ‘You hit like a b***h!’”

Wilder bumped into Anthony Joshua after his victory – and called to finally make the fight which now approaches ten years in the making.

He said: “I’m ready for whoever. It’s whoever as long as these guys is in the heavyweight division, I’m here.

“Like I said, you can call me Mr Clean because I want to clean up the whole division. The heavyweight division is nothing without Deontay Wilder.”
