Sony reveals huge PS5 price increase coming in DAYS over key part shortage

IF you’re thinking about buying a PS5 you might want to get one before Thursday as prices are set to skyrocket.

Sony has announced that the much-loved console will go up by a whooping £90 due to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape”.

The recommended retail price for the PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal are all increasing globally.

It means the standard PS5 will cost £569.99 in the UK, jumping 19 per cent on the current price.

Meanwhile, the PS5 Digital Edition will retail at £519.99 – up 21 per cent – and the PS5 Pro will be £789.99 – up 13 per cent.

It’s all believed to be due to a shortage of RAM and storage kit essential to many devices.

Huge demand has been driven by a surge in AI data centres which also depend on RAM.

And experts have warned that other popular consoles and consumer tech could be affected by the very same shortage.

“With no sign of prices easing largely due to demand for AI infrastructure, Sony will have made the move to protect its slim hardware margins,” Piers Harding-Rolls, a gaming industry analyst from Ampere Analysis, told the BBC.

“It wouldn’t be a surprise if Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit in the not-too-distant future.”

Separately, Sony has already had to temporarily suspend sales of SD cards in Japan.

Gamers have reacted in anger and disbelief at the announcement online.

“I’m old enough to remember when consoles went down in price over time, not up,” one person wrote on Reddit.

“This genuinely might be one of the worst generations of gaming,” another commented.

The changes are due to come into effect from April 2, so if you’ve been considering a PS5 you might want to take the plunge sooner than later to avoid being stung by the rises.
