Huge Traveller fleet sets up camp in popular city park just as Easter holidays get underway

A HUGE traveller fleet has set up camp in a popular country park as the Easter holidays get underway.

Locals were outraged to see several large caravans moved onto Sheldon Country Park, Birmingham, over the weekend.

Video footage captured in the park by a resident showed a fleet of caravans parked in the car park of the family attraction.

Several separate mobile homes are visible in the video, with at least two large trailers in tow.

The clip also shows a number of trucks parked in the car park of the country park, seemingly brought in at the same time as the caravans.

At least three of the caravans and two trailers can be seen taking up an entire corner of the car park as locals cram their cars in the leftover space.

Dozens of residents have left their cars in the remaining space as they try to enjoy their Easter holiday at the country park.

Only a few empty parking spaces can be seen in the footage with the caravans appearing to take up at least two spaces each.

As a result of the travellers moving in, the public toilets in the beloved green space have allegedly been closed to visitors.

Locals have now reported the caravans to the relevant authorities, demanding action be taken to move them on.

City councillors have since committed to carrying out an assessment in the hopes of removing the travellers.

Councillor Paul Tilsley said officers would finish their assessment today with the aim of issuing an eviction notice tomorrow.

He said: “It is a constant problem, travellers moving from one park to another, parking up and dumping their rubbish for the council to clean up.”

Unfortunately, the country park confirmed that while it remained open for the Easter holiday the public toilets on site would be closed in the wake of the travellers’ arrival.

The friends of Sheldon Country Park said they were aware of the travellers and had reported them.

Taking to social media the group said: “We have just been informed the travelling community have arrived on the main car park.

“It has been reported to the relevant team.”

Birmingham City Council previously said: “Birmingham City Council is committed to actively protecting its land and will take steps to recover this land where unauthorised encampments encroach upon it.

“The council has useable transit sites and plots for use by the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community – which is in line with Government policy – and details of the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation assessment carried out and updated in 2019 can be found on our website.”

The Sun has contacted Birmingham City Council for comment.
