Inferno rips through historic building as homes evacuated and fire crews battle blaze saying ‘completely avoid area’

FIRE crews are tackling a major blaze at a Grade-II listed mill in Leek, Staffordshire.

As flames engulf every floor of the historic building the sky is lit up orange as it is reported the blaze can be seen from miles away.

Multiple fire crews are at the scene of building blaze on Mill Street and emergency services have warned locals to stay away.

A fire service spokesman said: “We have multiple crews in attendance at an incident at the Big Mill, Mill Street, Leek, where we are responding to a building fully alight.

“Please completely avoid the surrounding area.”

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging the public to “completely avoid the area“.

The building, Big Mill, is currently unoccupied but has planning permission for 34 flats.
