Ex-Top Gear star James May chains up his bike outside court where he was due to appear on motoring charge

TELLY presenter James May chains up his bike outside a court — where he was due to appear on a motoring charge.

The 63-year-old former Top Gear and Grand Tour host was accused of failing to correctly insure his motorcycle, a 1970s Suzuki GT750A.

He was due to be tried at Lavender Hill magistrates’ court in South London and could have been fined up to £1,000 if convicted.

But May, nicknamed Captain Slow, avoided an appearance before a magistrate by striking an out-of-court deal with prosecutors so the charge was withdrawn.

Mr May did not comment on the hearing, instead only asking photographers: “How did you know I would be here?”

May was part of the one of most successful presenting partnerships on British television alongside Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond since 2003.
