Sky Sports’ referee expert Dermot Gallagher branded the incident “so dangerous” and made the point that Thompson was lucky officials did not see.

In a statement today, The FA acknowledged that his behaviour was not seen by the officials but it was caught on video – leading them to the conclusion that it “constituted violent conduct”.

The FA also said that Thompson denied the charge “but an independent Regulatory Commission found it to be proven following a hearing”.

The midfielder will now be forced to serve a three-match ban.
