FORMER Ajax winger Quincy Promes has admitted to stabbing his cousin, his lawyers revealed.
The 34-year-old received an 18-month jail sentence in 2023 for the 2020 incident, which took place at a family party in Abcoude.
Promes had accused his cousin of stealing family jewellery, resulting in a major fight.
His lawyers say he “stabbed once with a pocket knife” allegedly in a certain state of mind and possibly in self-defense.
While he initially denied his involvement, the former Ajax player has now admitted to the crime.
Gert-Jan and Carry Knoops, his new lawyers, have revealed that he wants to adopt a different stance than he did previously.
Promes acknowledges that exercising his right to remain silent in the first instance was ill-advised.
His legal team said: “He had lost all faith in the justice system and is now receiving psychological help.”
Carry Knoops revealed that “enormous fear and anger about how he has been portrayed as a criminal by the Dutch justice system” had previously hindered Promes in giving his testimony.
She also stated that Promes was traumatised after hearing of how other prisoners were tortured after being arrested in Dubai.
The former Eredivisie winger said through his lawyers that he wanted to go back to the Netherlands voluntarily and that he did not understand why the Dutch state did not take him there.
As a result, he exercised his right to remain silent because he no longer had any faith in the rule of law in the country.
Promes now says he no longer wants to stay silent on the matter, but would prefer to make a statement behind closed doors.
He said: “Otherwise, you’ll throw me under the bus again with all the media present.”
The substantive hearing of the appeal in the Promes case is scheduled for the end of this year.
Before retiring from professional football, the Dutchman played for Spartak Moscow, Ajax, Sevilla, Go Ahead Eagles and Twente.
He also made 50 appearances for the Dutch national team.
