Blue Lagoon, a family-run business founded in Glasgow in 1975, has built a loyal following with eight restaurants in the city, as well as branches dotted across the west of Scotland.

Now, the award-winning chippy is expanding south of the border with a Newcastle city centre site.

The family-run chippy has welcomed everyone from popstar Justin Bieber to celebrity chef Nigella Lawson through its doors.

Telly chef Nigella Lawson described the famous Scottish chippy’s grub as “perfect” and “exquisite” after indulging during a trip north in 2018.

Justin Bieber once forked out £20 in 2016 in the iconic chippy on grub including deep-fried haggis and chips.

Scot singing sensation Lewis Capaldi even used Blue Lagoon to film an episode of Amelia Dimoldenberg’s Youtube show Chicken Shop Date.

The new restaurant, set to open in May, will take over the former Dicksons bakery, near the historic Bigg Market.

Fans can expect deep-fried favourites alongside tartan treats including haggis and a sausage eclair, as teased on the window posters.

The new store is set to offer other Scottish delights including pizza crunch and deep-fried mars bars.

Blue Lagoon Newcastle will boast a 56-cover restaurant, an adjoining takeaway counter, and home delivery, backed by a £1.5 million investment.

The new site will mark the third-generation family business’ 17th restaurant and its first step into England.

Founded in 1975 by Italian-born Ersilio Varese and his wife Edda, Blue Lagoon quickly expanded across Glasgow.

Now, 50 years on, the business remains in the Varese family’s hands, now being run by Ersilio’s son and three grandsons.
