Where to buy the best flowers for Mother’s Day that not only last but WON’T cost a fortune

Flowers are a classic Mother’s Day gift – but some blooms fade after a day or two, and deliveries can be costly.

Consumer expert Helen Dewdney, who is the founder of thecomplainingcow.co.uk, says: “It’s much cheaper to buy your blooms in a supermarket.”

Save money this Mother’s Day with supermarket blooms that look great and last longer – Lynsey Hope shares her top picks

Here, Lynsey Hope picks some shop-bought alternatives to delivered bouquets.

BLOOMIN’ LOVELY

Asda is handing out thousands of free flowers for Mother’s Day

I BOUGHT two tulip bunches at Tesco and still had two fewer flowers than the Amazon offering, but Mum’s not going to notice.

The store flowers appear to be just as good quality and have lasted well.

SWAP: M&S Lovely Mum rose bouquet, £40 (free delivery), marksandspencer.com

FOR: Waitrose Celebration bouquet, £16

M&S Lovely Mum rose bouquet, left, Waitrose Celebration bouquet, right

SAVING: £24.

The Waitrose bunch was prettier, well wrapped and had more vibrant colours, making a lovely gift. Just a day after delivery, two of the M&S flowers looked past their best.

SWAP: Next Multi Bright Posy fresh flower letterbox bouquet, £22, next.co.uk

FOR: Aldi’s Beautiful Blooms bouquet, £5.99.

SAVING: £16.01

THE Next flowers were pretty but the bunch was very small. Aldi’s bouquet was bigger, with similar colours, more stems and considerably cheaper.

SWAP: Joyful bouquet, £35.98 (includes £5.99 delivery), prestigeflowers.co.uk

FOR: Asda Bright and Beautiful bouquet, £15.

Joyful bouquet, left, Asda Bright and Beautiful bouquet, right

SAVING: £20.98.

THE Prestige flowers looked a bit limp, and even after two days in water didn’t perk up. Asda’s offering had vibrant colours and a budget-friendly price tag.

SWAP: The Pardeep hand-tied flowers, £37, bloomandwild.com

FOR: M&S Spring Abundance, £13.

The Pardeep hand-tied flowers, left, M&S Spring Abundance, right

SAVING: £24.

I like the spring vibe of the Bloom and Wild bouquet and there isn’t much like it in the shops.

But the M&S flowers had a similar feel with pretty white roses, warm purples and sprigs.

SWAP: Interflora Mother’s Day tulip bouquet, £45 (free delivery), interflora.co.uk

FOR: M&S roses and tulips, £16.25.

Interflora Mother’s Day tulip bouquet, left, M&S roses and tulips, right

SAVING: £28.75.

THERE is no denying the work that went into creating Interflora’s bunch, but they were pricey. As a cheaper alternative, I mixed two bunches from M&S together myself.

SWAP: Waltz bouquet, £26.07 (inc £6.99 delivery) eflorist.co.uk

FOR: Sainsbury’s Alstroemeria Abundance, £5.

Waltz bouquet, left, Sainsbury’s Alstroemeria Abundance, right

SAVING: £21.07.

These two bunches were identical – but Prestige’s was overpriced and had fewer flowers. Sainsbury’s had the best selection in store, and this pretty bunch was a steal for a fiver.

SWAP: Moonpig mixed pink hydrangea plant, £42.98 (includes £7.99 delivery), moonpig.com

FOR: Sainsbury’s pink hydrangea, £15.

Moonpig mixed pink hydrangea plant, left, Sainsbury’s pink hydrangea, right

SAVING: £27.98.

THERE were eight flowers in Sainsbury’s bouquet, and just six in Moonpig’s. The supermarket blooms were also beautifully wrapped. A super saving.
