Four cash-saving ways to offset rising fuel prices amid Middle East conflict

DRIVERS should be braced for more pain at the pumps as oil prices rise due to conflict in the Middle East.

The RAC has warned that petrol diesel prices, up by 5p and 9p a litre respectively in the last ten days, will continue to rise.

But here are ways to help ease the strain.

SHOP AROUND: There can be big variations in prices at the pumps in a small radius. You can use tools to find the forecourt offering the lowest costs on any given day.

Try apps PetrolPrices or MyRAC — you can search by current location or by postcode.

CUT IT OUT: It’s a bit of a no-brainer, but the AA suggests cutting down on any non-essential journeys by car.

Consider whether the finer weather and lighter days can make it easier to walk or cycle to and from work rather than drive.

Or try to tag on journeys. For example, head to the shops after the school drop-off or gym session if it means cutting down on driving distances.

FUEL DRIVE: The way in which you drive can determine how quickly you burn through fuel.

Lots of accelerating and braking is one way to quickly go through your tank. Instead, try to keep at a steady speed, slowing down and driving in higher gears where possible.

Keeping your tyres inflated and to the correct pressure will also help keep fuel use lower.

And give your boot a good clear out so you are not weighing down your car with excess weight, which requires more power.

You can also turn off air conditioning to keep your tank fuller for longer.

LOYALTY PAYS: It’s worth signing up to loyalty schemes offered by petrol providers. You can collect points and also use them to get money off filling up.

For example, you can convert 300 Nectar points to 5p off a litre at participating Esso petrol stations.
