In video footage caught by her friends, Tianyu had been smiling just seconds before disaster.

Holding the burning cake up, she opened a small bottle of flammable liquid and took a swig.

When she sprayed the liquid – which was 96 per cent alcohol – at her cake to complete the stunt, chaos struck.

Instead of blowing out the candles, the fire swiftly shot back at Tianyu’s face.

The shocking video showed the moment she drops the cake to the ground as her face is engulfed in a blue flame.

According to Britannica, blue fire indicates the hottest flame, which is about 1,500 degrees Celsius.

The flames appeared to burn her mouth and neck as she recoiled in shock.

She was later rushed to hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The 26-year-old said she had seen several similar videos online and believed the trend to be safe.

“Everyone online said it looked good so I thought it was safe to do,” she explained.

“I searched for ‘birthday fire breathing’ videos and the results all seemed cool and atmospheric with no warnings or reports of injuries.

“I thought it was a safe trend for influencers to do, so I tried it.”

The Chinese actress, who debuted in Stephen Chow’s film The Mermaid, shared footage of the aftermath, showing the results of the trend-gone-wrong.

Tianyu, from Chaoyang City in China, said she was “still recovering”, revealing that the ordeal had also singed her eyelashes, but didn’t leave any damage to her vocal cords.

She added that she found it “incredibly irresponsible” that related videos “conceal the safety risks” behind the viral trend.

Tianyu said she had posted her recovery journey online as a warning to others of the dangers of attempting the challenge.

“Safety is always more important than vibes,” she wrote.

“Don’t gamble for your life for a viral shot.

“I hope everyone who sees this will learn from my mistake.”

She urged other people online to not “blindly” follow trends.

The actress graduated from the Shenyang Conservatory of Music and got her start in the entertainment industry in 2016.

She has appeared in several films, music videos and television dramas, including Sunny Sisters, Babel and Don’t Call Me a Love Saint.
