The midfielder was born in Vienna but represented England from Under-17 to Under-20 level having grown up in Northampton.

Chukwuemeka’s most recent international call-up came in March 2023 by England’s Under-21s – although he was unable to feature due to injury.

With Fifa having officially ratified his Austria switch, the highly-rated star could make his full senior international debut later this month.

Having already qualified for this summer’s World Cup, Austria are set to take on Ghana and South Korea in friendlies on March 27 and 31 respectively.

Bossed by former Manchester United caretaker Ralf Rangnick, the Austrians have been drawn in Group J alongside Jordan, Algeria and reigning champions Argentina this summer.

Chukwuemeka’s new international team-mates will include the likes of David Alaba, Marcel Sabitzer, Konrad Laimer and Marko Arnautovic.

The Austria new-boy signed for Chelsea from Aston Villa in 2022.

He went on to play 32 times for the Blues’ first team before being deemed surplus to requirements last year.

After being limited to minutes in the Conference League and League Cup under Enzo Maresca, Chukwuemeka joined Borussia Dortmund on loan in February 2025.

He impressed enough in Germany to earn a permanent £24million switch last August.

Chukwuemeka has since made 20 appearances in the Bundesliga, although just six of these have been from the start.

The attacking midfielder has also played eight times in the Champions League this term, featuring back on English soil in defeats at Manchester City and Tottenham.

In addition to Chukwuemeka, Paul Wanner has also switched international allegiance to Austria.

PSV ace Wanner, who was previously at Bayern Munich, played for Germany up to Under-21 level but has now also decided to represent the country of his birth.
