A 15-year-old footballer has died after collapsing during an Oxford United academy match.

The club announced that youth player Amelia Aplin collapsed at the club’s training centre in Horspath, during a match against Fulham.   

A club statement read: ‘The thoughts and sincere condolences from everyone at Oxford United are with Amelia’s family, friends, teammates and coaches.

‘We would like to place on record our appreciation for the efforts of the medical staff at both Oxford United and Fulham Football Club, along with the emergency services.

‘The Club will offer support to Amelia’s family, players, coaches and staff impacted by this tragic event.

‘We would ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time.’

Tributes have poured in for young Amelia since the news of her death was announced by the club.

Fellow EFL football clubs such as Ipswich Town, Plymouth Argyle and Millwall have sent their thoughts and condolences to the academy star’s family, and Oxford United as a club.

Many social media users have also paid tribute to Amelia. 

‘Heartbreaking,’ wrote one. ‘Sending all my love to her family, friends and all at Oxford United.’

Another replied to the post said: ‘Sincere condolences, terrible news, poor girl. Shine bright Angel. Thoughts with all Amelia’s friends and family.’

‘Didn’t expect to see such devastating news on opening X,’ commented another. ‘Its never nice losing someone, but at 15 so many years of her life left to live.

‘Poor Amelia, sending my love and prayers to her family and friends during this sad time.’
