Rachel Weisz pictured with co-star Matthew Macfadyen in first dramatic shots from remake of classic Sixties thriller

Pinned to the ground by a policeman in a London park, dishevelled Rachel Weisz appears distressed during a dramatic arrest.

But this is not the Oscar-winning actress’s undignified downfall – these exclusive pictures were taken on the set of her new psychological thriller, Séance on a Wet Afternoon.

Weisz, 56, stars with Succession’s Matthew Macfadyen in a remake of a 1964 classic which had Kim Stanley and Richard Attenborough in the lead roles.

The plot centres around Myra (Weisz), a troubled self-proclaimed psychic who convinces devoted husband Billy (Macfadyen) to help kidnap the son of a wealthy family, believing that will enable her to prove her powers by finding the missing child.

But as the plan spirals out of control, Billy begins to realise his wife’s dangerous obsession could destroy them both.

Filming was taking place last week on Hampstead Heath in north London where Weisz, in a Sixties-style peacoat and leather gloves, was thrust to the ground as she was apprehended.

What makes a great remake—faithfulness to the original or bold new twists?

Macfadyen, 51, was spotted looking downcast as he filmed scenes with a policeman.

The film also stars Joe Alwyn, best known for his seven-year relationship with pop star Taylor Swift, who has appeared in The Brutalist and Hamnet.

Alwyn, 35, was seen sprinting across the set during filming for the drama and embracing a co-star, Austrian actress Julia Franz Richter, between takes.

The film is based on a 1961 novel by Mark McShane and the original adaptation earned Kim Stanley an Oscar nomination.

The new version is set to be equally prestigious – the script is by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne and the director is Tomas Alfredson, who made the acclaimed 2011 film of John Le Carre’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Weisz, married to former Bond Daniel Craig, won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for 2005’s The Constant Gardener.

She is also earning rave reviews in Netflix’s drama Vladimir as a married professor romantically drawn to a young student played by One Day’s Leo Woodall.

Séance on a Wet Afternoon is set to be released next year.
