BRIGHTER March days can show up dirt and dust in the home that we may have missed during winter.
So now’s the perfect time to give rooms a quick once-over. Here are some handy tips to get your place sparkling . . .
FLOOR WARS: Give rugs and doormats a good shake outside and wash those that can go in the machine.
Look at your skirting boards. Use a dustpan and brush to loosen dirt and dust, then wipe over with hot water and a dash of washing-up liquid. Dry with a soft cloth.
BEST FOOT FORWARD: Go through your shoe rack and clean any muddy soles. Use a brush, like the Pepprig two-in-one shoe brush from Ikea — now £1, down from £2 — to get the dried mud off.
Make a paste with three parts bicarbonate of soda to one part water and use the brush to apply to the soles. Wipe clean and leave to dry.
REFRESH CARPETS: Brighten your floors by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda over the carpet.
Leave it to sit for half an hour then vacuum thoroughly for a fresher smell and brighter floor.
For a deeper clean, consider a carpet cleaner. You can hire a Rug Doctor machine from B&Q for £27.99 a day. You will then also need cleaning detergent, which is £22 for four litres.
If you have a Library Of Things near you, it might be possible to hire a carpet cleaner, including a litre of detergent, for £30 a day.
Alternatively, you can hire them from lending online platform hygglo.com, from £17 a day.
HIDDEN HORRORS: Make use of the brighter days to look into forgotten areas of the home where muck has built up over the winter months.
Move aside sofas, cabinets and beds so you can vacuum up hidden dustballs and other trapped dirt.
Do not forget to push the narrow nozzle attachment under radiators, to get to the dust, hair and crumbs that could be hiding there.
